So, as I mentioned in that other thread, went camping this weekend for the first time in eight years. The goal was to get my wife to enjoy it enough to do it again.

It went pretty well. Arrived Friday afternoon and set everything up. We were fine and dandy till our camp neighbors showed up. There were about 9 of them. Five kids, four adults. They were freaking loud and the kids were very screamy. At least my wife now understands why I want to camp in the wilderness instead of a campground.

Saturday was HOT. Got up to about 100 degrees. We were not enjoying that. The tent was a sauna, and the flies were out in force everywhere else. Once it cooled down, we started having a good time again. Even the neighbors quieted down some, so we had a good evening.

We left early today to avoid the heat. All in all, it was a good trip. My wife agreed to try it again... in cooler weather.

Here are the pics.

Turned out pretty good considering it was done with a pan on a camp stove

Sounds pretty good, but judging from you camp site, wide open like that, it looks like it would be killer hot. I always try to find a nook somewhere in the trees if I can. I total sympathize with the bad neighbors. One of the reasons I avoid campgrounds as much as I can, but like yourself sometimes they are inevitable. Going on off seasons helps a great deal. Also going during overcast or rainy times can sometimes be as much and even more enjoyable for having the whole camp and trail to yourself. Just a matter of bringing the right gear to stay comfortable in those conditions.

Here is to convincing the wifey to go out on more trips :thumbup:

The last time I went to a campsite, I hated it. The kids were too noisy, and didn't seem to sleep at all, so I see where you are coming from with the kids.

As long as you had a good time though, and learned a bit of what to and not to do next time, glad the wife wants to do it again

Congrats on a successful trip! I'm glad to hear your wifey is willing to try it again in cooler weather. Try again in late September or October. The weather may be cooler then, and since kids are well back to school, campgrounds tend to open up a little.

Nice SOG Field knife. I always liked those.

Dang that SERE 2000 looks sweet. I've wanted one ever since I read an article about it in Tactical Knives about 8 years ago. Did you use it much for bushcrafty chores?

Well, I've never tried to baton it or chop with it, but I've used it for pretty much everything else. It's my favorite folder. Big, but it rides low in the pocket, so it doesn't feel so big. Nice grip for my big hands.

Dude, I missed buying the SOG Field Knife, and I have cursed for quite some time over it.

Thanks for showing off an old friend.

great pics man.. nice knife selection too...:) i always liked those SOG field knives... definitely well worth the $$$...

where abouts in Cali. were you folks??

Good pics, thanks for sharing. I took my sons camping last year to a place like you went and hated it. The first day the place was pretty deserted and it was great. The next day the RVs poured in and so did the noise, the kids riding bikes all over and yelling, the people sitting outside in their lawn chairs, blaring their radios. Made me leave early.

Yeah, the Field Knife is nice. It takes a wicked edge. Blade is a bit thin, though, so I usually carry the Fallkniven when I go into the woods. Better for limited chopping. The SOG cuts steak like nobodies business though.

The campground was at Prado Regional Park in Chino, CA. It's actually pretty nice as far as campgrounds go, but I really don't like most campgrounds. It's rare, in my experience, to not have the experience ruined by inconsiderate (loud/drunk/rude) camp neighbors. We had kids running around in their little golf carts, screaming and yelling, until after 1AM. Some jerks were yelling at 3am. In an RV or trailer, with better soundproofing, it's not so bad.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Specially liked seeing the SOG Field knife and S1. I'm from Chino CA and lived there till I was 10 years old. Totally forgot about Prado park but now that I remember it, I remember a few picknicks and such there. Good times, thats for helping to bring back some old memories. :)

Cool pics. That is great that your wife said she would go again with. That is a good start to some more camping fun. when the weather is a little cooler though LOL.

Thanks for sharing,

Next time, put some dirt on that Land Rover's tires and find you a spot off the beaten path! Nice ride:thumbup: The pic of your kid fishing is great. My wife likes to camp, but not in 100+ degree weather. Looks like y'all still had a good time. Steaks look delicious!

I just got back from the Sierra's, had to drive alot to avoid the camp crowd. I am in search of good places to camp in Southern California without alot of driving. Going to look at Sespe Creek this week end. Good you have fun, always nice to get out.

AAAHHH !! The SOG Field Knife ..... one of my favorites, I had one and let it sorta slip away. A pal now has it but he won't give it back (or sell it back, or trade it back) ..... maybe one of these days. The Field Knife is a wonderful piece of Tactical Tableware.

Prado ..... Chino .... HOLY SMOKES !! That's just over the hill from me !! (I'm in La Mirada).
(Wildewinds: have you been to Centro Basco in Chino ?? My favorite restaurant !!)
Another place to camp is at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. Trees, grass, a small lake, horseback riding.

I just returned from 6 days along the Kern River, north of Kernville. Best time to go of course is during the week, there is no one at all and it is peaceful and quiet. And have dinner at McNally's Restaurant, a great group of people and the food is fantastic.

PatrickKnives: Sespe is a beautiful area. Also, I'll suggest north of Ojai, along Hwy 33. I haven't been there in years and years, but there is lots of wide-open country there, and you're in the mountains. A fantastic highway for a motorcycle ride.

Cheers,

Carl

Congrats on getting the other half to agree to annother shot in cooler weather. Generally when their first expierence is in JULY with the heat, bugs and piss poor neighbors they give it up. I'll camp anytime of year, but its hearty souls that brave this kind of weather.

Great pics!!! Your daughter's adorable. My 4 year old girl has the same fishing pole!
