I was told today that you cant boil water or cook in a soup or coffee can for drinking or eating out of , like rice or whatever? Im asking here because i trust the ESEE crew. Thank you Ray:confused:

wait, you were told you can't boil water over a camp fire? Or cook out of a can?

That's news to me. I've done it many, many times.

I think BloodGroove is refering to some (all?) cans having an interior coating that could be harmful to your health if the can is used as a cooking pot. I have heard this myself, but do not have a definite answer to that question.

some of the newer cans have a liner or coating inside (white most often) that could be harmful when heated .

If this is true, you can always boil water in a plastic bottle and even a styrofoam cup with out it melting. Weird, I know.

I save my old coffee cans, peel off any stickers/labels, punch a hole in sides for a bail, and have boiled water/cooked in them many times. When they get junky, recycle them and make another. Great way to save money instead of buying a high priced item and they WORK!

i always just carry my old gi canteen cup. boiled water and cooked rice in it many many times.

+1 for canteen cup cooking!

I recently got a glacier 16oz cup that my nalgene 32oz bottle nests into - even fits into my versipack (with a little patience)

Between the cup and my guyot backpacker (32oz ss bottle) I can cook, boil, etc. with no worries.

YES WOULDN'T USE AN NEW CAN...........the reason is because I tried about a year ago, boiled some water to make some tea, ok, got it boiling the water was already clean, just needed to heat it up, got it boiling made tea, and 45 minutes later I PUKED it right back up, while I was taking a shower.........BAD PROPERTIES IN THE CAN, WHO KNOW'S WHAT'S IN IT.........All I know is my body didn't like it.......

I wonder if you could take an empty can and throw it in the fire and burn any coating out of it before using it to boil water? I mean for an emergency type situation??? Heating that can up until she's red will burn out just about anything they can coat it with I would think.

You could probably see or even smell if something is being burnt out of the can while it's in the fire. I'm not saying stick your face in there and take a huge long whiff, but if you smell something nasty, you know she's coated and burn the can until she doesn't stink anymore.
