i'd like to go on a getaway. anyone have any suggestions for a good camping trip in the southeast? Alabama or georgia preferably.

I think the Appalachian trail starts somewhere in GA. I'd look into something around there.

look at one of them trail guides. lots of good places in n. ga. in the cleveland/cornelia area. this time of year you'll have the whole place to yourself. :D

Primitive or someplace with amenities? I personally like the Cohutta Wilderness which is on the Georgia-Tennessee line. I've heard that there is some good camping in the Talledega National Forest in Alabama, but I have never been there myself. You also have the Cherokee National Forest in Georgia with plenty of camping close to some water sources. Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions.

The Pinhoti trail starts SE of Birmingham and travels well into GA.

Living just north of Atlanta and being Scoutmaster of a large troop, I have had occasion to venture into the wilds of the GA mountains and AL mountains both. Both areas offer great backpacking and camping. There are state parks that offer the full range of camping experiences in both areas... campers down to primitive. The Talledaga National Forest and Cheha State Park are in the same area in AL and are nice (Pinhoti Trail runs through Cheha). There are nice areas in North AL as well, closer to Huntsville. Cohutta is good, and as mentioned the AT starts in GA. There is also the Benton-McKaye Trail that winds up into TN. I would suggest digging into the State Park websites to see more of what's to offer.

jenkinma,

Not to hijack this thread, and I think the information that I am looking for could also help out the OP, but do you have any experience hiking around Pine Mountain. I think that is FDR State Park which is East of the Columbus/Lagrange area.

Thanks,

Tommy

As a matter of fact I do... I have been to FDR twice with my Troop and love the Pine Mountain Trail. Not too hard but not too easy. Great campsites on the trail or in the campground. Nice nature trail (3 mi loop) as a side trip. What is neat is that for quite some distance, you are on top of a ridgeline looking at beautiful scenery on both sides. A couple of the backpacking sites have creeks nearby for water, too. The only challenge is that they don't take "reservations" for those sites, per se... you can reserve a space, buy you can't get your exact location until the day of the hike... and those sites don't allow fires (stoves only). Talking about it makes me want to go again! If you want more info, drop me a note...... Matt

I seen Pine Mountain on TV and it looks really nice. One of these days I'm going to make it up there.

Hello, I have hiked a bit around Northern Alabama and can highly recommend the Sipsey Wilderness Area located in the Bankhead Nat Forest. You can camp along the trails on a first come basis. Also, Lake Gunnersville and Buck's Pocket provides ok car camping. Gunnersville is just very, very busy during the summer. I've not been in Taladaga Nat Forest but have heard great things about the Pinhoti trail.
Also, there is a private land called Dismal Canyon that is stunning. It has something like 12 big water falls in a 1.5 mile area with improved trails. Its very kid friendly too.
I've posted some pics around here of sipsey here:

And dont forget the Smokies!

I am in Northern Georgia untill May and am looking for spots to go camp soon. Maybe next weekend, so I'll watch this thread.

I have Dismal Canyon's website saved under my favorites. I haven't had the opportunity to go and see the place yet, but it is on the list.
