Camping during a fire ban

Ill be going camping in a couple days, sadly enough, there is a fire ban. Its going to be different not gathering firewood and not processing firewood. I will be bringing a propane fire, hopefully i can get away with that. Im thinking about bringing a grate to throw on top as if im cooking.

Ever since i bought the bk9, ive taken it camping with me. Im thinking of leaving it at home in favor of the bk4 this time. When ive had the bk9 theres hardly ever a reason to use anything else (except food prep). So if theres a limb that needs chopped, the bk4 will get to do some work. My bk5 is still new so i intend to find some work for it. Itll probably help the kephart with food prep. That will help me keep the bk18 at home with the king. As i keep the bk11 on me when im in the woods, i think im good on fixed blades. Even so, ill probably throw my bk2 in the truck.

So ill be taking more knives than usual but i have less use for them than usual. I always tell people that i make sense, they dont believe me though.

I Love camping... I hope you get to have some Fun. :D

*pretty much can't wait till 2020 is over!

Yeah me too. Tent camping to be specific.

On the east coast we never had to worry about fire bans, on the weat coast there is a serious threat of wild fires. We went out last year around the same time and on the second evening, a ranger came by and made me put it out. Less than two months ago i was out in the same area when there wasnt a ban, two separate groups left their fires blazing when they packed up and left. Terribly irresponsible. Ive been responsible with my fires since childhood when a ranger was not happy with the size of a fire i made.

Last time I went camping, I packed so many Beckers I was pretty much ready for everything from eating dinner to cutting down small trees. My wife thought I was a little crazed, but that wasn't really anything new.

Have a great outing and post some pics!

Well, we got out to the road our campsite is on and we were sad to see that it was closed off due to a fire. Hours away from cell service and losing daylight, we needed to figure out what we were going to do. We usually stay away from campgrounds, they are mostly reservation only and/or cost money. But we had passed one a couple miles back and figured we had to do something. The first section was overcrowded for my taste, i like my camp to be secluded. We found a few obscure roads which the first two turned out to be nothing. The last road we went down opened up to another campground with only one small group. It turned out to be a pay campground but they were waiving the fees. I didnt want to waste the last bit of daylight and in my haste, I think we somehow found the best campsite at that campground.

Heres a few pictures:

Heres a small stream that our campsite was backed up against.

The only becker i used was the bk62, and only used it for a few veggies. But i did snag a couple pictures of it.

Here is a main reason i didnt use a knife more than needed. My baby girl loves the outdoors.

More pictures to come.

And heres more pictures:

With the fire ban in effect, i had my propane fire pit. Its not like a real fire but its a nice substitute.

Heres another shot at the kephart knife.

Meanwhile, my daughter is just loving it up!

Taking the dogs for walk heated up my pooch, any puddle she finds, she has to lay in to cool down no matter the weather outside.

It was a pretty short stroll to get to the river which ran parallel the the small stream behind the campsite.

A few gunshots had my wifes dog shaking and trying to get under the packnplay. However, my daughter did not mind the gunshots one bit.

All in all, it was a pretty relaxing weekend. Especially Since the beginning looked doomed to fail.

It looks like you lucked into a nice campground. You gotta love it when it works out like that. Getting the cute kid and dogs outside is priceless.

Nice. I never pass up an opportunity for camping.

As for fire. I'm not sure what the laws are where you are at bit in California, generally if we are under a fire ban, gas (propane, butane, etc) is fine. Sometimes even charcoal is fine in an enclosed device or bbq. Really the issue is fires that throw sparks which can cause additional fires. Gas fires don't spark or have much risk for igniting additional fires. Also if open fires are allowed they want you to get a burn permit. Luckily they are free

Thanks guys. It was a good time. Its nice to get out there. Plans were to head back out this coming weekend but it looks like its not going to happen though.

There was a posting saying no fire and no grill but propane was fine. The propane fire didnt have anything popping out of the fire nor did it have any ash or smoke floating around. Its fairly safe given where you set it up. Keep the area around it clear as well as above it. With real fires, ive singed leaves 30’ above the fire before. Id imagine youd still have to be cautious with the propane fire, though 30’ is excessive. 10-15’ is probably sufficient.
