Next month I'm off to holoholo (just go around no real destination) on a camping/fishing trip.
First time not staying at a beach park, campgrounds, or beach house.
Roughing it, not even sure where.
So I figured I need at least a folding saw.
Check.
Axe? Probably not.
Here's the rest:

Not sure about the big knife.
The hunter is 1095 and the Canadian is stainless and since we'll be on the beach I'm favoring the CBK.
Will I even need a big knife?
I'm also thinking kukri...
No, I ain't buying no smatchet!

Helle and Fish Hunter are for sure?

I was going with a SAK, but decided the Swiss Tool is better.
Now that I think about it, I already got a Tinker in the tackle box.
Probably take the Spyderco bait knife in the cooler.
Almost forgot, I'm taking my KaBar Hobo!

Think I should get a folding shovel?

Anything else?

I'd take a Estwing, Marbles, or other camp axe/hatchet to drive in the tent stakes at the very least --- or a Irwin 18 to 36 ounce hammer for the same thing. If you need to split wood, you can always carve/whittle a wedge and beat it through with the axe/hatchet/hammer or a stick.
I agree with Bob in post number 2: Leave the big knife at home, and that a folding shovel is a good idea.
If nothing else, the folding shovel will help insure the fire pit is buried properly when you move on to the next site.
The folding saw is also a good idea.

Don't forget the pocket size sharpening stones. All knives get dull. It comes in real handy to be able to sharpen them while sitting around campfire while munching on S'Mores.

I'd take 2 & 4. I was not aware of the value of serrated edge until come to this forum then bring one while camping & fishing.

It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. All the choices look like they could serve a purpose if needed. Take them all, keep em in the vehicle in case you need it.

The more the merrier. Besides, what better opportunity to play with your tools; try them all and the next time you wouldn’t need to ask.

I would also take along a small bottle of baby (mineral oil) to keep everything happy. If you are near salt water rust can happen overnight. A quick wipe with a few drops of oil can help to protect your blades.

How big will your fish be?

You should know better than to ask that......;)

If you are going to be carrying all that in your backpack... I would stick to:
- Multitool mainly for the pliers, which might come handy to tinker with gear. If you are not carrying stoves or anything that have mechanical features, then take a SAK instead, it is ligther.
- Hatchet for pounding crap and woodcraft
- 4" fixed blade (plain edge) for general cutting, food prep, gutting fish, etc.

I own the Spyderco Fish Hunter and it is a pretty dedicated knife meant for spearfishing. It is design solely for braining fish (thin sharp point), cut line if you get tangled and not much else. Blade shape is not ideal for cutting bait, skinning or gutting. I need to make a kydex sheath for it because the stock one is crap for strapping it to the leg. I wouldn't use this blade for anything else as the point might snap too easily.

If you are set on carrying more blades, I would suggest a dedicated fileting knife. I am not familiar with the fish you have there and how do you prepare it for cooking but it might come handy.

These ^^^ comments would be mine - assuming you are doing this all out of a vehicle.

Outdoor excursions are just about always fun - and an excuse to play with our outdoor toys!

Taking only 5000 size reels; so maybe 10lbs max (wishful thinking). Thinking anything larger and I'm getting spooled (taking extra line just in case).

Going to haul everything in a truck, but probably need to walk some.
You're bumming me out about the Fish Hunter! Was on backorder and I waited like three months for it! If I catch something really big maybe I can stab it (see above).
I was just about to sell my Aqua Salt!

Going to be hauling stuff around in a truck.
Don't want to be carrying the kitchen sink.
I decided to get the folding shovel. Cause you never know.
Still undecided on the hatchet as I got a folding saw.
Maybe my brother got a filet knife or I'll look to Dexter Russell. Probably not cutting anything up though, just tossing it on the fire.

decisions!

If you are going to carry everything in a truck you can always carry some extra stuff and leave it in the trunk. If you happen to need it, just go back and pick it up.

Regarding the Fish Hunter, don't take me wrong, is a nice knife... but it is what it is. I think that for general utility, the Aqua Salt blade shape is better. At least the broader point will not be so delicate. So keep it!

Not saying you are underknifed, but maybe take also a SAK for its scale tools? The tweezers, toothpick, pin, pen and even the cork screw to undo knots are useful.

That's a lot of steel, OP. Nothing wrong with that. But, as Mikel_24 already mentioned, I'd save myself a lot of misery and pack a dedicated fillet knife for the fishing.

Have a great trip! :cool::thumbsup:
