Camping gear--a brief rundown of performance

18" AK by Sher--performed admirably as a wood splitter on pine and unidentified driftwood. Lots of ooohs and aaaahs, made me feel much safer in the tent at night.

Swiss Army surplus shovel--this thing is a beast. I used it to dig a fire pit, move coals, chop wood, and probably a few other things I can't remember. People all over camp were using it. Late at night on the 4th, somebody came up and said, "I hear you have an axe. Can I use it?" I said (mind you, khukuris don't get loaned out to strangers in the middle of the night) "Well, I've got a shovel that works kinda like an axe." A few minutes later, I can hear the sound of chopping wood across the campsite. Shovel comes back five minutes later no worse for wear. Great piece of gear.

Dutch oven--five bucks at a yard sale brand new. it's a 9 quart I think. Just needed a good seasoning. A few cooking sessions on the campfire have it beautifully seasoned. This camping trip only confirmed for me how effective lard is on cast iron.

Josh, the shovel interest me. Do you have a link with a picture?

Thanks.

Swiss Army Shovel

Aard--I've seen them cheaper than that--usually around $10 for the shovel and the sheath. Takes a pretty wicked edge. It's the only shovel I've had that can shave hair off my arm.

I gots one of thems shovels. A fine item for the vehicle. And now... it's thug approved. :D

I prefer the Dutch shovel though.

Ok, got it. I was pretty sure that was the one. I've seen them, and ALMOST gotten one. You've just tipped the scales.

We won't make any comments about people who want to shave with shovels.

No need. My wife already had the whole campsite laughing over that one

Of course, they weren't laughing when they came to borrow the shovel! :D

This is also the shovel I had in the trunk when my Civic got totaled. I used it to pry the body out of the rear passenger side wheel well so I could drive it away from the scene of the accident. Well worth the $10 I paid for it.

I went to Clam Beach over on the coast near Arcata. Spent some time up in Orrick and Crescent City as well. My wife took a few pics with her friend's digital camera, but I haven't gotten them yet. I'll post them if any of them turn out.

Just to clarify, I used the shovel to pry the CAR body out from the wheel well. I was tempted to use it to pry open the skull of the ******* who smashed my car, but I exercised my superhuman will and refrained.

Hey Josh..

you "have a brilliant future!"

Never seen so many chicklets. When do you take command of the South American armies and march to Anarctica?

I always liked "is a shining light." Sendero Luminoso? naw....

Well, as soon as Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos can round up the Zapatistas, I'll be making my move.

I doubt very much if the South American Generals will ever leave the Palm shaded Bar with women, tasty breads and fruits from around the world, and the wide screen plasma TV. They're planning the next campaign you know....

Field commander Marcos is writing a book. Did you hear that?

Actually, he's written one. It's called Our Word is Our Weapon. I've got a copy of it in my backpack as I'm typing this.
