Why not in Richlands Virginia :D, all joking aside there is an airport not to far from here, Tazewell County Airport. I have seen a couple of people fly in to start the trail here. For a larger airport there is always Tri-Cities airport in Bristol TN.

Theres a place called Abingdon Va not too far from Richlands. the Creeper Trail starts there and is part of the Appalachin Trail. Beautiful trail... no joke though Subaru is right watch out for people some crazy ppl out there. http://www.vacreepertrail.com/ might be a start...but that said its a ways away from chicago.

Well i would end up driving to the strat piont from there i would like to do a few days like hikeing to camp then go a bit more camp then trun back and hike back to the truck

You should check out the appalachian trail! Lots of places to hike out for a couple days and back, or even do a loop.

Series of videos thru erwin tenn. here.http://www.youtube.com/user/Pagansdad

Give us a few more details about what kind of trip your looking to do and we can probably be more help:)

hi all i need some help if any1 could lend a hand. I need a good starting point to start my camping tripp in the Appalachian mountains. I'm from Chicago IL. Any thoughts??

That is a pretty vague question in that the Appalachian Mts are in several states; VA, WV, NC, SC, TN, GA an MD. A lot of very pretty land. There are many great places to go. I have a little bit of experience in the NC region, particularly around Boone and Blowing Rock, NC. The Linville Gourge is a beautiful place and there are a lot of trails. I have not done a multi day hike in the Gourge in the middle of winter but I think that it could be safely done. I know that you did not specify a season. This area is at about 4800-5000 ft so that helps it get snow and the weather is very changeable.

Feel free to PM or e-mail me at desherman@rcn.com if you want more info on this particular area.

Planning these trip is have of the fun so enjoy.

thinking of starting in VA i've herd it's real nice so any info for the APS in VA would help. and Shermdo i'll most likely hit u with some E-mails if u have info about VA thanks all so faw you guys have been helpfull. keep them comeing

:D SeanGCO and I both live in South West VA, what would you like to know?

Some helpfull hints about this area: bring a variety of clothes, weather is constantly changing. Don't talk bad about football or coal. Avoid trailer parks. Fast food takes longer to make in a small town. There is a lot of curvy roads. If you go into Tazewell (the town, not the county) don't mention Richlands and visa versa. Good luck and have fun

There are lots of good starting points, I suggest you do a little browsing over on http://www.whiteblaze.net/ to decide which section you'd like to see. In general the extreme northern portion and the southern portion are more rugged / wild, while the middle is a combination of pastoral country and going through little towns.

Hey buddy im from the chicago area as well. We should exchange emails ive been wanting to do some backpacking as well. My buddies brother was from boone and he loved the trail out that way. its about 10 hrs or so away.

If you'll be heading down to VA, you might also want to look into visiting Harpers Ferry. It's cool little town with a lot of history (if your into that at all). There's some good hiking there and, depending on the season you go, you can do some river rafting as well.

1. Get an RC6 and a US Army Survival manual

2. have a helicopter drop you in the mountains.

see you in a week :)

Shermdo do have any web sites of the trails for VA. i've found some but not any good ones? And we're looking at going in the end march or may.

glefic>>

check out Red River Gorge in KY, too. They have campgrounds, back country camping and cabins. All of it is set near the river, near Natural Bridge and it sits in the Appalachian Mtns.
Shoot me an email if you want, I go there all the time. kemsatsurvival@yahoo.com
