Anyone else here read Camping in the Old Style by David Wescott? Great book. It's very interesting to see how people functioned in the wilderness a century ago. Definitely worth the read for the pictures alone, but also contains some good info on campcraft/woodcraft.

Yah. I read this book about a year ago. There's some very interesting stuff in it. I found the brand names to be of particular interest. Marbles was synonymous with knives. Duluth was synonymous with backpacks. All in all, it was a very interesting read, and well worth the time.

I've been reading several similar books over the last year. Two very interesting things:
1: It's amazing how light they could travel if they wanted to,
despite heavy materials
2: The world wasn't as rustic then as we think. Kephardt talks of
glowinthedark compass needles, caloric and mineral content
od various foods, and other information that seems modern.

I recently picked up a copy of Camping In The Old Style as well.
It fits right in with the others by Nessmuk, Kephart, Jaeger et al.

These older volumes are a wonderful resource and I find myself turning to them frequently.
