How's it going everyone? I am new to the wilderness & survival forum and just hoping to get some suggestions on my camping pack so far and what I can add to it, to make it better. I finally have some time to go camping after finishing the Fire Academy. Soon starting Paramedics at the end of the year.

Pack- Under Armour Defender Backpack
Knives - Tom Brown Tracker#2 & CRKT Serengeti Hunter
Watch - Casio Pathfinder 1500 (graduation gift)

-Adventure Medical Kit Weekender (Modified)

-Blast Match & altoid tin full of char cloth (awesome stuff)
-Poncho(3) & Emergency Blanket(3)
-Glow Sticks
-Binoculars
-Brookstone Twist LED Light (Looks cheap but it works/ looking to buy surefire e2d defender when I get the money)

-Altoid (Fire) Tin = flint & steel/ char cloth/ waterproof matches/ Mini Bic lighters/ magnifying glass/ petroleum cotton balls/ candles(2)

-Altoid Tin #2 = Fishing line/ hooks/ sinkers/ small compass/ wire saw/ razor blade/ sewing needles/ purification tablets/ Band aids & alcohol wipes

Now I was going to add some rope to the pack but I need some suggestions on how long I should make the rope. And also what is something I can wrap the fishing line around to make it more convenient to store. I wrap the two altoid tins together with small yellow rope and then shrink wrapped w/ plastic so it doesn't get wet. And lastly I'm debating between a folding saw or a small hatchet any suggestions.

Where are you headed? Swamp, timber country, mountains, desert?

What environmental hazards do you anticipate? Disease carrying bugs? Hail? Heat?

How will you be traveling? Foot? ATV? Horse?

Anyone going with you?

How will you get water? (This is the most important question for me in most situations.)

So many elements of a trip will factor into kit selection. Seems like you've got a good start though.

Hey, congrats on finishing the academy. Good luck in medic school.

You might think about picking up a compass, they are handy to have around. Also, if it's going to be your woods-walking light, you might rethink the SF E2D. The "strike bezel" is really just going to tear up your stuff (pockets, packs, etc.) A better light for that purpose would be the E2L. It's not got quite the output, but it's plenty bright enough for lighting up the trail. I carry a E1L, in fact, and I've never felt under-powered with it. YMMV.

Howdy 'Ol Bud & Welcome ! Looks like you got a good start on your gear:thumbup: As for Rope, I like 550 paracord...I usually have about 50' in my pack along w/ a roll of Jute twine. I'm also going to add a roll of contract grade twine ! What about your Water Supply ?

I would suggest you consider adding a SAK Farmer or similar knife, and a small diamond "stone" to sharpen your blades if need be.

Thanks for all the suggestions, some of the things I didn't mention were water supply just a simple water bottle, and cooking set I have a small set somewhere I can use.

Hey Spartan, Welcome to the club..got a couple of things for you. #1. I cut little cards that look like a capital letter "I" to wrap my fishing line and sewing thread on,makes for a small package. #2. since it says your in FL I would wrap that razor blade in tinfoil then plastic, same with needles..they rust up like nobodys business due to humidty.#3.I concur on the 550 cord as rope, mine is cut into 2 5 yard/15ft lenghts so I can use it to measure or double it to pull my butt across water or mud(safety line). #4. get a mil surplus poncho liner and an ultra-lite hammock to go with your space blanket. gets you up off the ground away from bugs and critters if you are spending the night. glad your here!
