'Du + firesteel pics go here?

It's 35° and sleeting this morning, no camping for me atm.

I have a few times, but it was just for fun in fairly ideal conditions. I always have a Bic/matches, but it's not a bad idea to have a ferro rod(s) around too.

Your firecraft is strong if you can ignite tinder with a 2.5 inch ferro rod.

That's the way I always light fires. Camping, woodstove, backyard firepit. Well, in the firepit, I went to a long-neck lighter for a few last year, as I was starting with a bunch of dead pine branches with lots of needles. I started doing it this was (with the rod) a couple years ago as my standard way, so that if I got into am emergency on the trail, I wouldn't be starting from no prior experience.

It often takes a few strikes.... sometimes many. But less if I do the proper prep up front.

I'm camping next week with my son and his Cub Scout pack. It's fairly easy-going, but he loves it. I try to make it more like rougher camping by prepping our own meals and setting up our little hobo camp in the larger Cub Scout camp.

The question is, should I take the BURP, or something smaller... the BURP would just be overkill, but cool

I think it depends on the group. For me, I'd probably take an AMS and/or SOS and maybe a large blade for wood processing (BME2, 1111, DTBM, etc...).

Bet the scouts would get a kick out of the BURP though. The closest I have to that model would be my BG Hell Razor, which is also a badazz piece of steel.

Yeah, last couple times out I took my Hellrazor (infi, stripped, w/black magnum G10 scales), and it did it all, and turned heads in the best way.

Since I was testing out my Emberlit stove, I used it for medium fire prep, and a Game Warden for small food tasks.

This time, I'll use a small propane camp stove, so not too much fire prep. I have plenty of sectioned wood ready for the fire pit. So the knife will do food related tasks, whittling, and other general camp tasks. My 3v Lon Humphrey Kephart is really all the knife I need. But the BURP is the one I want to carry. The runners up are my Skinny ASH and my Trash 2.

Decisions, decisions! :D

I like to take a Basic 8 LE or TGLB camping. Funny thing is I get comments about bringing a machete yet around here these are considered just mid sized

The only camping I do any more is at our cabin up in the mountains. So not really roughing it persay but I use a good stout blade for all my fires like making fuzz sticks and splitting up kindling and all food prep. Logs I use my Stihl axe these were taken yesterday. We went down to get everything ready for our bear season in November. Used the dog soldier a lot and my Case copperlock. Made a great pair. Felt good to have cold enough weather to light the woodstove

The DS is a awesome camp knife!!! I love it. It makes a all around great camp/hunting/hiking knife where as the tramp is a better leave at camp do all knife at camp. My Camp Tramp is so jealous of that thing.
