My son and I are camping this weekend and I have chosen my knives carefully. Four knives in three steels: N690, 1095, and two in AUS8. Will put 'em to the test.

In case you're interested, these are my four knife choices: Kizer Horn, Rat 5, Gerber Freeman Guide from the 1980s (my first knife used for hunting), and my Utilitac II. A wharncliffe, tanto, and two drop/clip points. Should be fun. That's all I got to say...

Not sure I'd bring along more than a belt knife and a folder. If backpacking more than a mile or two, I;d cut that down to just one or the other (probably a folder for weight).

If car camping, the sky is the limit, and a machete would be under the set of my pickup along with an e-tool and hatchet.

Whatever: Have a great time with your son. Take pictures and enjoy the weekend. Time flys and before you know it the memories will be what you have between phone calls from him and the grandkids.

Enjoy your trip and let us know how the knives perform :)

My wife, daugher, and I have a cabin trip planned in a couple of weeks. I'm kind of in the same boat: What goes, what stays, etc.

I think I'm going pretty light (for me):
1095 TOPS Combat Knife for busting stuff for the fire.

Cruwear Adamas Mini for walking the well trodden trails. I have really fallen in love with Cruwear.

Victorinox Camper because...well, why NOT bring a SAK? Tools, stainless, etc. There will be beer bottles. There will be wine. A cap lifter and a corkscrew will be handy.

Have fun with your son!

Pics or it didn’t happen. I’ve wanted to say that, not sure I believe it. ;)

I used the Rat 5 for cutting green limbs for hot dog sticks and the Gerber for food prep (cutting carrots and potatoes). The green wood actually provided a lot of resistance to cutting. The folders sat in my pocket and were never used. We took a 6 mile hike over rough terrain and I am sore. Other than that we had perfect weather here in eastern Missouri. Overall, very light use for the knives. My son brought his axe and we got a lot of mileage out of that.

Thanks for sharing, you know you are getting older when it takes longer to recover than it did to hike it.
Yes, we did the hike in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Lots of steep climbs and steep descents. Worked my knees over real good. Thanks .

When I still had my popup trailer, glamping really, I used my Alox SA knife a lot just for cutting chords and opening plastic things for meals.
