I work with kids doing adventure activities including camping. My main advice, do as many small trips as you can. If its one week out in the summer, or 6 overnights every weekend, do the weekends. Your little guy will appreciate the trips more when they are manageable, and you won't feel as bad if you miss one. One rained out weekend is an adventure, a half rained week is a disaster. Think about it this way, you want a camping buddy when he's 16, 17, 18 when a weekend away with dad isn't going to be as high on the radar as other stuff. i work with so many kids who's only camping experience was a tired, sleepless, miserable time, and its a struggle to get them to see the good parts. All they focus on is the camp chores, and the struggle. Then I work with other kids who the whole thing is an adventure, even scrubbing the trangias, or rolling up a tent.
