So currently i’m after my first all-around survival knife, as i have a cold steel tanto and some other cheap knives here and there. i want a good, strong survival knife that’ll do everything, and currently i’m torn between the SRK in VG-10 San Mai or the Outdoorsman in the same steel. Both look great and have amazing reviews, but.. which one is better?

If you are looking for a survival knife, the SRK is literally the “Survival Rescue Knife” where the outdoorsman is more of a hunting knife. I had a SRK years ago I took hiking, camping and hunting with me and it served as a pretty good all around knife for me.

Hi and welcome to BladeForums.

Both options are solid knives.

Due to the different designs, they will exhibit a few different characteristics.

The SRK is a sort of “jack of all trades” design. The Outdoorsman is a bit more purpose built for hunting.

Do you have any specific uses that you would use the knife for?

i've said it once befoe
and i'll say it again...
back in its day, the srk (survuval rescue knife) was designed as an affordable
piece of grunt edge gear.
it was THE bushcraft knife well
before bushcrafting became vogue.
one look at the outdoorsman
and one would think its some
type of japanese tanto.
it is a highy refined knife.
i tend to see as a combative knife
with enough finess to dice & slice lettuce.
so its a decision between a complete
workhorse versus stylized sophistication.
its a no brainer eithet wsy :)

I don't have any experience with Cold Steel's San Mai, so I just want to ask, why San Mai and not 3V for the SRK?

That said, I have a Master Hunter in 3V and I'm happy with its performance.

Welcome to Bladeforums Jadon.

I like the classic blade and handle shape of the SRK.

Fun fact: Les Stroud, known on t.v. on the show SURVIVORMAN, carried the SRK (at least he used to: unsure of today)

If that aint a rousing endorsement, nothing is

I have the outdoorsman and it a solid knife. The main difference between the two is the grinds and the "bone breaker"" . I used my outdoorsman for a.long time and had no complaints. The hollow grind .makes it a slicing machine and the bone breaker comes.in handy to hack off branches etc without dulling your edge.

In the end, it all comes down to what you think. Either one will serve you well!
