If I had a blade with a suspect heat treat, could I send it out to get it heat treated for a second time?

It would have to be annealed. Heat it to a high temp and let it cool slowly.

The quick answer is "Yes". It can be redone.

Heat-treating is a two-step process: Quench and Temper.

Either process can fail.

For carbon steel blades:

Sometimes, a properly quenched blade can just be retempered. Remove the handle and stick it in your oven at around 350-400 until it turns yellow-brown.

If that doesn't work, then you'll need to have it requenched, as well as retempered.

For Stainless blades:

You will need to send it to a professional heat-treater (Paul Bos, Texas Knife Supply, and others)

Tell us why you feel the heat-treat is suspect?

Daniel is right, but let me clear up a misconception I am seeing in posts lately. If the tempering was done at too high a temp, the whole HT will have to be re-done.I have seen posts stating to try 400 degrees and if it seems too soft try 350.Once it has been over-tempered it is only reversible be HT.
All this requires having the blade bare (removed from any knife it was in).
