Somebody gave me a Case Sodbuster in stainless that they found. (Having a rep as a knife nut has its own advantages.) I am working to restore it but there is just a little bit of play. This is a shadow pattern, IIRC. Can it be squeezed and peened? I have often heard of this being used but I haven't tried it before. I want to ask before I do something stupid.

I think the Case soddies use something called a 'compression rivet' for the pivot, and I don't know if it can be 'peened' in the same manner as a conventional pivot pin. I've wondered about it too.

Don't know if he's still active on BF (haven't seen posts from him in some time), but you might look up BF member 'Seals' (Don Seals) and send him an email. He has re-built & customized Case Sod Busters before, and I'd bet he'd have some good suggestions for you, based on what I assume he knows about the factory pivot on those knives.

I'm not sure if regular members can see it, but the mods can see the last time a member logged in. Don last logged in four days ago. Don doesn't have email activated. But, you can leave him a visitor message (VM).

I was able to snug up my yellow cv sb jr with no issues. Just wrapped the pivot in leather and tapped it over an anvil lightly on both sides till the play was gone. Just check often to make sure the action is still smooth.

and by anvil I just mean a heavy piece of flat iron.

Hi guys! I'm still kickin'! I check in here once in a while.Yes,that pivot is simply a cutlery rivet compression pin.You can lay one side on a hard flat surface and take maybe a 1/4" punch and tap it on the other side. That should snug it up.A little dab will do ya most likely.( : Don

Thanks Don, very good to hear from you again.

I mentioned I'd been curious about this too, for some time. I'll have to give it a go with one of mine.

Much Thanks! again. :)
