Can a Civilian be Taken Apart?

Recently got a used Civilian. My second Civvie, G-10 version, as an addition to the Tufram one I've had for years. The blade on this one is mint condition, but the front scale (one without clip) is REALLY badly scratched. Scratches to deep that G-10 is white in the scratches, not even black.

Soooo, I was thinking of taking the knife apart and refinishing the scales. BUT, I don't know what those two pins near the pommel are, and if they can be taken out. The ones I mean are the two identical pins near the lanyard hole. The pivot pin and the pin near it with a screw at the back are easy, but I've never dealt with those little pin thingies before, and I was wondering if someone else took apart theirs?

Help? :)

Usually, you can't get Spyderco pins apart, unless you want to cut them out, and get new completely new ones.

My civilian is the carbon fiber handle so it may not be the same, but mine has what look like peened over pins on the front and philips flathead screws on the clip side. I assume you can just back the screws out to disassemble.

Is the G10 version the same?

Mine is just like this one here:

They do look like pretty solid pins, so I'd hate to have to drill them, but I thought that since the pivot pin and the other pin next to it are removable, maybe there's a trick to removing the rear pins too. But it sure doesn't look like it. I suppose I can live with it, it's going to be a daily-carry-just-in-case knife, so I don't need to to be pretty. :)

Sure!!!

You slice him up the middle, remove his guts, lop off his arms, etc... no problem!!!

From what spyderco reps have said in the past, no you can't take it apart without pin destruction. Because of this, pinned spyderco lockbacks are generally not repairable when there are handle problems. However, because it's pinned, it'll always be tight and you'll never lose a screw.

Yep! :) Thanks for the input everyone!

It's pretty much what I figured, nice big solid pins. The blade is in great shape, and the scratches are cosmetic anyways, so I'll carry it as-is until I get some free time and then maybe try something.

I've taken a Delica apart by drilling the pins, and they are hard. It's very important to protect the scales from the drill slipping about. I wouldn't try it on the G-10. Have you thought about a light bead blast? Mask off anything you don't want zapped. The pins would turn gray, but it might look pretty sharp.
