Can a GEC be a backyard garden beater? Let’s see!

For yard and garden work I always carry a stainless modern knife with pocket clip and one hand opening. The one handed use is huge when doing certain types of work, but I was sick of carrying something uninspiring. Enter the GEC 99.

I had a clip installed by a wonderful forum member and then put on a kwik thumb stud. Sharpened at 17 degrees per side and finished on a .5 micron strop. Filed down the kick just a touch so the tip sits a little lower when closed. She’s ready for the garden. I’ll keep y’all posted on how she holds up! Please forgive me for what I have done….

So I ask: blasphemous? Can I still hang out with y’all so long as I keep it in my pocket and nobody sees it?

Have a garden beater traditional? Prove it!

As per the guidelines of this subforum it is no longer a traditional knife because it has a clip and thumb stud, but will say I can see the utility in this for garden work.
I'd just use a fixed blade myself, but this isn't a bad option.
Indeed, though Case has been adding pocket clips and thumb studs. I personally consider traditional a style or an aesthetic. To me a knife can have a clip and still be traditional.

I really don't do any heavy work outside anymore but I do carry this a lot and when I need a knife for cutting anything , or digging out weeds , or almost anything else , I do not hesitate to pull it out of my pocket and use it . Even with dirty hands I can pinch it open . I usually do not go get a big fixed blade for help .

Just wipe it off and sharpen and oil it as needed .

Although it might not be strictly legit with regard to the Forum regulations it is a mod and the spirit of using a Traditional is there  Far too many knives are pocket loungers or even photo attention w****s with certain owners never daring to use them, odd. However, I don't always find Traditional spring knives to be the best for many types of garden work, ditto many of the monster bloated Moderns. I really dislike getting sand, earth into the mechanism, takes forever to clean out the gritty aftermath:eek: So the Opinel is a very useful workhorse: lightweight, inexpensive, many sizes & types, it locks but no liner or spring to get fouled up and you can mod them to taste.

Power to your project, it is good to see a knife being used purposefully and plenty of people at GEC would approve of it having to earn its crust .

Thanks, Will
