Your asking several questions here. I'll try dealing with some of them. 1) Paul's heat treating does set a cutlery industry standard. 2) The steel on the early 700 series could have started with 440C. Perhaps only the Colt 703 The others are most likely 425M. Any of models of this series should not be difficult to sharpen. Have you used a black marker to mark the bevel to know if your scrapping the edge bevel at the correct angle? DM
