Can a Recon Tanto be too sharp?

I bought the knife new in 96 IIRC, and read the care instructions. It is suppose to be stored with a layer of oil and kept in it's paper sheath. I must have dropped the ball, because when I took it out it had slight dark spots on the bare edge. Not much, just tiny dots two here, three there exc. and no pits. So decided to hone it with soft arkansas, just enough to make the dots disappear. Now that I've finish the edge is quite over sharpened in my opinion. It will slice Bounty paper with only a touch and has cut my skin with slight contact, though not enough to bleed. I worked with glass for 20 years I'm used to sharp objects, but to me is scary. All I did was follow the bevel on the stone until the dots disappeared, no reshaping.

Looks like your Recon Tanto has a well-thinned edge ideal for the original purpose of the tanto design. Nice.

I guess all is good then, I just have to be aware. I thought an oversharpened edge would be considered too fragile.

It's all relative, compared to a bk2, I'm sure it is fragile. But I'm sure you're fine, and if the knife cuts that well, use the heck out of it, and enjoy it!

When I first got it, used used to use it carve my bachelor meals. After I got married I we got a kitchen knive set for a gift. I'll try to find opportunities to use it.

I feel the Recon Tanto is designed to be carried and used as a secondary weapon. I love them, so I have two...but I've never carried them because Canada. If I lived in a place where it was legal to carry a weapon, I'd very frequently have one of my Recon Tantos on my belt.
