Can animals share a telephatic link with its human masters?

I recently saw a documentary where a Vietnam veteran was saved by his dog after an explosion. His "war" dog dragged him about 30 yards into a trench, thereby saving his life.

This "link" which I mentioned has been reported to have happened to cats that awakened its owners about a fire that is raging in a house.

Other animals similarly have displayed such qualities.

How does one explain this form of communication between animal and man?

The cat will wake you up to say, "Hey dumb@$$. Wake up and open the door so I can get outta here! The house is on fire!? :p

I personally don't believe there is a telepathic response going on in a situation as you described. It's more like a 'bond' of respect or mutual friendship between human & animal as well as Medic1210's assertion of 'self preservation'. Whenever one of my dogs has cried, barked or whimpered at an unheard sound or strange smell, I never thought they were trying to warn or help me but they were just reacting to environmental stimuli which may annoy me enough to act on their acute senses! This could seem like some type of communication between animal & man.
Don't get me wrong! Some astounding feats have been reported by people who were dragged from burning buildings, awakened in the night before earthquakes have struck, etc. I just don't feel any telepathy is going on, although I have received some subtle messages in the middle of the night - "Wake up & get me some dog biscuits" or "You better get up & let me out or there's going be a pond by the back door!" :D

Dogs have Masters / Cats have staff

In a house fire my dog would risk its life to protect me from harm, for my dog worships the very ground I stand on...

In a fire my cat would consider my body a good fire break, if I managed to save my cat's life from a house fire, my cat would still treat me like I owed it money...

Interesting question, which I don't have an answer for. All I can do is share my experiences. Both of my dogs have woken me up when my blood sugar dropped to dangerously low levels (I'm a Type I insulin dependent diabetic). My shepherd will jump on the bed/couch or lick my face to wake me up. The boxer will just stand at my side of the bed and cry. Even stranger is that my german shepherd will follow me into the kitchen and sit by my side while I eat a snack. Only when I finish my food does she lie down to go to sleep. My dogs are by no means 100% but they have saved my tail more times than I care to count. The only scientific explanation I can give is that they can sense/smell my body changes when my blood sugar drops. Usually I sweat a lot when my blood sugar drops below 70. Hope this helps.

Not sure. but I have tried on many occasions to comunicate through telepathic (and verbal) communications with my neighbors dogs when they decide to start barking in the middle of the night. I've tried telling them that anti-freeze is good for them and they should drink as much as they can.
And failing in this attempt, I tell them to jump their fence, find a VERY busy road and try to dash across it as there is a cat on the other side talking trash about their breed. This too has failed.
Next is to just tell them that their owner is the Devil and it's up to them to save the world.
If it works I'll post about it right away.

Just looking over what to watch on the TV tonight & see on the Discovery channel at 9:00pm (in New Jersey, anyway): Animal Telepathy - communication links.

After viewing the show, I haven't changed my mind about this topic. There seems to be, from what I saw, a strong case for sensory perception & not telepathic communication between animal & human. The humans & animals seemed to 'read' each others' body language rather than 'reading' each others' minds, especially in the case of the horse trainer! I think the dog 'licking' the woman's cancerous growth was not to tell her it should be checked, but something along the lines of smelling something he'd like to 'roll' in!
