After my truck gets fixed up (which will be a while)
Im dropping some cash on a knife. Im not sure what yet, so im compiling a list.
Im thinking a traditional would fix nicely on this list as well.
Every time i go to Tidoute, CASE, GEC, etc. I get messed up.
Tidoute and GEC just gives me a picture of the knife,
And CASE has like half of thier knives listed on thier website.
Im really lost. I also dont totally know what im talking about.
I would like a single bladed "sway back jack" and i cant even find on on the CASE website.
Im lost. :o
I also need some other brands if CASE doesnt make the designs im looking at.
HELP!

Take a look at the "Traditionals, Slipjoints, "Old Timey, Knives" forum. You might find just what you're looking for there.

A single blade Swayback Jack is called a Swayback Gent. A Google search will turn up many options.

A Sway Back Gent would be a single bladed Jack. Just google "case swayback gent" and it should bring up MANY results. Hope this helps!

Oops, Railsplitter beat me too it.

You will find this forum in the Exchange section.

Doesn't it drive you nuts when you walk into a party and have no idea what people are talking about?!?! Don't worry. Have a beer, hang out, keep digging and soon you'll be just a sick with this as everybody else.

Sounds like there are two primary points of confusion. Manufacturers and patterns.

GEC and Case are great but there are others including but not limited to: Buck, Canal Street, Queen City, Utica and Bear & Sons.

In terms of patterns, your local library probably has a book or two on knife collecting. That will give more than you can take in. A super simple summary of some of the most common traditionl slipjoint is discussed on the Wikipedia pocket knife page:

If you really like to dig, google Schrades r us and find the catalogs section for Schrades. I think the first catalog from the 20s is a great read and a good way to get some of the traditional patterns.

Good luck and jeep asking questions.
