I just received this knife today and I would like to know if anyone knows the general date that this knife could have been produced?

It's 6.75" total lenght with a 3" blade. The blade has 'Taylor Cutlery' & 'Japan' on one side and 'Elk Horn' & 'Surgical 1980' on the other side. The handles are mother of pearl and nickle silver bolsters with brass liners and file work on the back spring. My guess is it was made in 1980 but what do I know? :D Also, why does it say 'Elk Horn' when it has MOP?

Japanese Elk have MOP horns.:)

Yea, you'd have to think it's a 1980. Back then a co-worker of mine used to get a Frost Cutlery catalog back when the Frost knives were made in Japan. We used to take up a big order at work and send it in. We saw several knives that had mismatched blades/handles. The MOP scales are so thin it could be that the blades were stamped for an entirely different knife and just used in these handles, no one will ever know! It's just hard to picture that handle with thick Elk horn scales, come to think of it, it's hard to picture any knife with Elk horn handles, I thought Elk had antlers.

Elk Horn is a trademark of Taylor's started in 1979, I'd guess your knife was made in '80, too.

Thanks guys! I'll add that info to my taylor.txt file. Man, I love this place!

LOL on the Japanese Elk Wirebender! :D

I'm confused on the Elk Horn also. I have a Parker Gypsy balisong with Elk Horn inserts. Pick Here, it's also in my sig pic. I always thought that horn as in a rhino, is made of hair.

I just found one of these Taylor knives for 5 bucks at the flea market so I grabbed it for my collection. It's a two blade slip joint similar to a stockman. About 6 5/8" oa and both blades are 3".one blade is clip point and I guess the other would be called a spear point or something. It has very fat (for this size knife ) antler scales. I saw several of these for sale online but they gave no more info than what was already on the knife. On one side of the main blade it says Taylor cutlery Japan and on the other it says elk horn surgical 1980.

Another necro-thread. You do realize the last post here was 15 years ago, right? Better to start a new thread about your purchase...

Lol yea it didn't even occur to me at first that this might be an old thread. I was researching the knife and when I typed it the name this thread popped up. Ahhh well.
