Just found this old buck stockman and it has no model number on it. I'm thinking it may be a 301. measures 3-7/8" closed. I'm curious as to the age of it also.

You are correct that it is a Schrade model 301 Stockman the grooved bolsters are that knive's trademark. They first came out in late 1967, followed by the model 303. We then asked Schrade if they would change the design so that we could make the repairs that would inevitably start to show up. The way they made the knives was really cool, you just could not repair them without replacing just about everything. They declined and we went on to Camillus, who made the rest of the 300 series for us.

Joe if you are going to post swear words you need to do it in Whine and cheese- not the Buck Knives forum please. :D LOL

Thank you very much for your invaluable information :)

FYI, On purpose, I purchased a later model 301 which had been file grooved in an attempt to copy the model above. Anyone wanting a orginal one study the pictures carefully of a real and any online auction or sale picture to be sure you are getting the real deal. :-}

You can see Schrade made knives without the grooves in the bolsters, very late in the run, but all Schrades are more serpentine in shape than any Camillus made 301. The grooves are the first clue but the shape of the body is the defining feature.

For me, the lack of bolster pivot rivets provides the quickest and easiest way to identify a Schrade-made 300 series 301 or 303.

Over in the Schrade forum a question was asked and I had to come to the Buck experts to ask. We know Schrade contracted out to make a few knives for Buck, the question was if Buck ever made any knives for Schrade?
Seems most of the old companies made knives for one another over time.
Camillus, Colonial, Schrade, Remington, Buck all seemed to be working together.
Anyone know?
Thanks
Larry

sorry wh4f,
I will wash my mouth out with soap later. :rolleyes:

You know that is an interesting question but I am pretty sure we never made any knives for Schr@de. I can think of only a very few times when we made knives for other companies and they were always fixed bladed knives.
