I happened to notice this knife in the drawer in the kitchen last night and I took it out to play with and decided to try and find what it is since I haven't really touched it in 20+ years.
I was in the first Gulf war, deployed in 1991 to the gulf in support of desert storm. I bought a leatherman PST right before leaving and the blade on it was more like a butter knife than anything of real use.
While I was over there I noticed a guy who was attached to our unit had a nifty stainless steel knife and a good sharpener so I ended up swapping him some powered speakers and an autoreverse walkman with FM radio for it and the sharpener.
The sharpener was the spiderco triangle and the knife says it is a spyder as well however there are very few markings.

I tried going through the catalog last night and coudn't find it but since it is from prior to '91 and perhaps much farther than that back I'm at a loss.

the knife is 1/16th past 6 1/2" long the blade 2 5/8" it has a stamping of SPYDERCO on one side of the blade and SEKI-JAPAN on the other. It has a pocketclip near the blade hinge and a lanyard hole near the other end. the body appears stainless to me.

leatherman sidekick included for size

Appears to be the Spyderco worker. Great work knife, mine disappeared 20 years ago. Enjoy it!

That is a C01 worker

So I don't tell you any lies ill let someone with more knowledge tell you the specifics :)

ETA: I type slow

So is this a collectable knife then, since it's from so early on? I probably haven't touched 10 times since 1992.

Somewhat, if you look up completed sales on Ebay, it will give you an idea of value. Pay attention to chamfered or beveled handle edges, clip screw count, edge type and condition.

A first generation Worker (they only have two screws on the clip) are worth quite a bit.

Yours is nice too.

A sprint run means Spyderco will bring out a new version of an old model out for a limited time and a limited number of knives.

thanks for explaining!

does anyone have a suggestion where is the best place to go to get the most out of parting with this one? From what I see, selling here requires either a dealer or silver / gold membership.

eBay would be the obvious choice. However, keep in mind that "old", and even "old and rare" do not always equate to desirable and valuable. Truth is, aside from the original (1st generation) plain edged Worker the two screw clip which was Spyderco's first knife and is considered highly collectible even if it's in fairly rough shape, there's not much interest in older Workers in anything less than dead-mint condition, so it probably won't fetch a heck of a lot.

that probably explains what I saw on ebay. the only ones I could find were new/untouched still in the original box. which is not the case with this one. I just figured someone could use it more than our junk drawer could. back it goes I guess.

thanks to everyone for the help in learning about this knife! I'm glad I came here to ask.

It's really a crap shoot on the auction site. If you get a couple of people who really want it, the price can skyrocket.

I saw I Benchmade deep carry clip go for $30. Benchmade gives them away free if you ask.

You could always put a reserve on it or start the bid at close to what you'd like. The fees are going to eat up a lot too. Keep that in mind.

since i have no idea what it is really worth yet, i have no idea what reserve to ask. it does appear from what everyone has posted and what i've now been able to read it was a second gen worker. it has similar thickness scales, 3 screws in the clip, and the lanyard hole.

If anyone wants it, please let me know. I've been looking at getting a different leatherman for my birthday so if this could pay for part or all that would be good with me.
