The heartwood is much redder than how my phone makes it look. It is a very hard wood, judging from how it resists being dented by my thumb nail. This is a picture of a bowie block sized piece and then a picture of the bark. In the second picture, all of the white stuff is wax. I found this in a parkway that runs along my street here in Chicago. It sat on a shelf for 3 or 4 years and then I recently cut it up.

I am guessing it is elm, but I am far from being an expert. Thanks to anyone who cares to venture an educated guess.

That bark and wood makes me want to say a dogwood. Do you possibly have kousa dogwood in your area? Elm (at least the ones here and that I’ve used) have really thick bark.

Would you say it's from a young tree?

Oak will have smoother bark on young specimens.
I think it's from an old tree. I may be wrong, since it has been a few years since I picked it up.

Looks like an Oak variety.... Pin oak looks like to me......Fresh cut Oak smells like puke....🙄...Not kidding.... But not applicable here.😉.......🤔 Maybe Live Oak too🤔
