Can Anyone Identify my Friends?

Hey...here's a couple of pics I took yesterday. The tarantula? was taken at school late last night and the snake was found by my office, the victim of a car.

Can anyone identify them? This is in Central Texas if it matters.

Spider:

The body is black and the whole spider would fill my palm. It has a tan colored patch covering most of the back. Sorry for the crappy shot, it was about 2am and no lighting.

Snake: Little bugger is about 12-14" long.

It's impossible to scientifically identify that spider, I'd have to handle her. Send me better pics if you want more info.

Please don't take this as criticism, it's not. Just information for next time around. If at all possible when taking pictures of dead snakes for identification, a shot of the snake's belly color/pattern is extremely useful for narrowing down possibilities when going off of a couple of photos. While there are many smaller indicators that can positively identify a snake, they can not always be seen in any given photo. A shot of the back/side and one of the belly can often be enough, even when dealing with species that have several look-a-likes.

Appears to be a Sonoran Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer affinis), but could be a bull snake they share similar triats. Hard to tell without a good head shot. In either case they are harmless.

I recognize it as a non-venomous. The head shot was hard as it is smashed. I wanted to take some more pictures, but the ants are already done with it...
