Can anyone identify this Japanese looking knife.

Glad you figured out the pictures. Welcome to the forum.

It must be high quality. The spine has a lot of hammer marks and the edge is intact.

“I’m not always a smart ass, but when I am, it’s to somebody who thinks they’re special...”

Just a little good natured kidding. Happens frequently, new member doesn’t read the rules, old member teases them about it. New member corrects their mistake. No big deal.

I think it’s way cool to have that from your GGgrandma. Hone it up and use it every day.

It is some type of cleaver. I wouldn’t worry about its monetary value if it holds sentimental value to you.
It is a nice looking knife.

I i have no idea Welcome to Bladeforums. The knife looks pretty solid, so if it has a good heat treatment, then it shouldn't be bad at all. Not sure how thick the edge is, but that can always be remedied.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to familiarize yourself with the site rules which some take for granted, and like to rub in new people's faces if they happen to get it wrong.

It is Chinese, but it isn't a "cleaver".

It is a basic Chinese kitchen knife used in most "Han" Chinese kitchens as their everything knife, oftentimes it is their only kitchen knife. To European eyes, these may have a western cleaver shape, but they are multifunctional kitchen knives. They are for slicing as much as for chopping of veggies to fish to meat as well as everything else I may have excluded.

This is a newer one as it has a one-piece integral grip cast with the blade.

Looks like someone used it to split wood or did some sort of battoning with it.

To the OP, this may disappoint your dreams of wealth, but there are probably a billion+ of these Chinese knives in the world. Clean it, sharpen it and use it in your kitchen.

Please change your title. That is a CHINESE CAI DAO.
It is not Japanese.
To be honest, I have doubts if it is from 1900. All Chinese Cai Daos I have seen that old
are wooden handed and rather primitive looking compared to today's knives.
I also would not expect it to have much/any value.
