Can Anyone Recommend A Cheap Leather Belt Sharpening Machine . . .

. . . or whatever they are called?

I have been using a leather strop and 600 grit sandpaper as suggested here in the forum and FAQ. Love the convex edge. And I can get soft, thin dinner knives to hair shaving sharpness. But the hard steel khukuris are taking a long, long, long time (am I doing something wrong?).

Out of laziness, can anyone recommend a thin leather belt machine sharpener/polisher so I can put a good "kinda, sorta" convex edge on my Khukuris?

Many thanks in advance!

Nothing more dangerous than a sharpened leather belt...

"The sword around your waist." Inobtrusive, flexible and deadly.

:D

Greg, many thanks!

PG . . . . not to mention use in chastity belts . . . put it in and it don't come out. (by the way, this is a family oriented forum isn't it?)

You have to understand, poor Geezer has been a long time out in the cold frozen north, a tree-less expanse that he is responsible for, having denuded the entire area with his khuks.

Combine that with the prolonged anticipation of waiting for a return to the civilized world where his endless order of HI khuks were awaiting....well, you can understand the stresses he's under.

"....well, you can understand the stresses he's under."

Yeah. Your right Kismet. And maybe his only contact with society is this forum and the people on it. Sharpened leather belts. Yup. That's gotta be it. Poor old Philthy.:(

(And maybe his only contact with society is this forum... )
At least it makes him part of "HI" society :)

Up here, we only rub noses with people of Class. I think everyone here fits into that societal echelon.

Work has been very busy lately, though I did get a chance to take a picture out my bedroom window (see below). One of the hardest parts about being up here is that I don't get internet access during the day, so I usually miss out on Uncle Bill's deals when here. I make up for that in my off time though:D. Often the only entertainment left up here is surveying the deforestation for this forum. ;)

Tomorrow I get to pick up my Kumar Karda!!!:D

I still don't know how you can function in an environment like that, day after day. After the beauty, the bleakness strikes me. I couldn't take it.

On the plus side, after the beauty and the bleakness struck me, it occured to me that mowing the lawn was not an issue--good news!

stay warm.

You can buy a 1" belt sander for around 50$ US. You can buy leather belts for it, as well as any number of various abrasive belts for all kinds of shaping and polishing. You can also try buffing wheels for the cheap bench grinders.

Though I find it hard to belive, I figure building snowmen would get kinda boring after a few months.

:)

Cliff, thanks for the advice. I wish there was a Home Depot store around here (sadly there ain't). So it looks like I'll have to prowl around a bit to find a 1 inch belt sander.

Greg's pointer to Hand American was also really helpful. After reading their suggestions, I realize that I was probably sliding the khukuri at too low an angle to the strop and missing the edge.

See how reliable Canadians are (by the way, I just got a Canadian Tilley Hat on the recommendation of my cousin - that is one seriously good hat)? Wait a minute. Good ole Philthy of sharpened leather and chastity belt fame is Canadian, too. Hmmmm . . . well I'm sure he is just as reliable as the rest . . . just in a sort of self reliant, Unabomber kinda way. :D

(By the way, Sarge, I never figured out how UB uses his old leather belt - is he the strappee or the strapper? (I guess with something like Vanessa, it really doesn't matter which). )

In an effort to document the reliability of Canadians, note the following breakdown of replies to the original post:

What is it about Canada?

Whoops! Table didn't come out. It should be

Sorry!:D

Big Kahuna,
Glad that link helped out.
Sorry for the confusion, but you need to change the box score again: Tustin is in the heart of :cool:range county, California.
Regards,
Greg

With no offense to our northern brothers, profile has been edited to avoid any further confusion.

I guess that makes it a tie game, eh?

:D

Self-reliant? Definitely. What's a unabomber? Is that like a one-armed sport jacket? :D  ;)

Yeah, but you have to shovel the walks and brush off the car...:grumpy:

I have this old belt I wore out and an old electric motor I salvaged off a washing machine or something.....

From age 6 til I entered college at 16, ( and graduated at age 29 ) I was brought up on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. One of the most beautiful spots on earth to most folks.

Then I moved to Hawthorne, Nevada at age 30. By the time I started working on the reservation 5 years later, I relished the daily drive from the Tribal offices to the camp 15 miles out on a dirt road, and the same distance back.

Sand, sagebrush, alkali flats, rocky sand covered mountains. Barring the occassional F14 in afterburner who liked to buzz the only guy on the road for twenty miles from behind, there was peace and tranquility there.

Oh yes. I also got to go home at night.

And munk, if you're ever down this way, there are gorgeous spots out toward Aurora and Bodie, going the back way up the old stage trail.

Places of beauty and peacefulness where you feel God whispering in your ear and telling you all will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well ( and by the way, don't step on that rattlesnake ). :D :D :D
