I was asked last week if I could recommend a sharpener but I couldn't. I've never actually used a sharpener. So if I may ask, can anyone recommend a good sharpener? Or even the best?

You are the best sharpener. Without the skill the tools mean nothing.

Now you must pick the sharpening tools that will aid you in making a blade sharp.

i use sharpening steel that i have for my kitchen knives. it works fine for what i do. i guess more specific sharpeners are needed to get that mirror polished look.

What exactly are they asking for? What kind of knives are they going to be sharpening? Are they totally non-technical, non- hands on type folk, eg: grandma that just wants to pull her paring knife through an electric sharpener, or are they someone that wants to learn sharpening skills...or somewhere in between?
No knowing what they are looking for makes it somewhat difficult to answer, but I would suggest something like a Spyderco Sharpmaker as a good place to start for someone that wants to easily maintain a serviceable edge.

Search tool is your friend, man. Same question has been answered half a dozen times in the past month. :)

Your going to get a lot of mixed answers, but for something that's easy to use and gives a great edge, I vote for the sharpmaker. Just make sure the angle inclusive of your knife is lower than the angle you sharpen at. I had some asian whetstones and I was never good with them lol, and I don't have money to invest in the finer grit stones.

*edit*

I'm receiving my ultra-fine stones today and I'll let you know the edge I'll get on it. Currently all the way to fine stones and strop, I can cut phone book paper decently.

You can't go wrong with the Spyderco Sharpmaker, just watch the video that comes with it and you'll find it extremely easy to use.
Best of luck!

Hello!

1. Your skills are the best to sharpen (or work with anything)
2. Spyderco Sharpmaker is a very good tool, I use mine, when I have to get fast a good edge on it
3. Try water/oil stones, you´ll find enough information in this forum getting your needs
4. Get a strop (very important for a razorsharp edge and get some compound)

Try it out on some kitchen knives, to get your skills trained. If you are able to get a good edge with freehand sharping (not using the Sharpmaker), you´ll get very good results. Training is the key ...

Cheers!
