Can anyone recommend a real nice small folder?

I'm looking for a high quality, small folding pocket knife for a gift for my Dad. He always has carried a small SAK or something similar, but I want to get him a slim, light, but strong folder, with good steel. I thought about a BM 330, but I'd like to find one with maybe a 2 inch blade or maybe slightly smaller.

I'd suggest checking out the William Henry line of knives. The're gorgeous little things. Quality materials and craftsmanship.

The William Henry Kestrel or Persian are both in your size range and available with a wide variety of handle materials, though I would't rule out the Lancet. http://www.williamhenryknives.com/

The small Sebenza is about 3", but the Umfaan would nail it at 2-1/4". The 1999 pattern is very nice indeed.

There are a number of good choices at www.agrussell.com. Check under "production" and then "AG Russell". He's got a small traditional ATS-34 lockback that looks pretty slick and a couple of ATS-34 pocket knives with either G-10 or carbon-fiber. It'll cost you around $60 I think, maybe less - well under either of the *excellent* William Henry knives or the Umfaan.

If you can afford it the Umfaan is the way to go...

I agree with the above suggestions and first thought of the William Henry line as well, but in reading your post again you stress a Strong folder, now the WH line are tough knives but the Strong folder requirements would probably go to the Umfaan without a doubt, in that size you are looking for at least.

I've a William Henry Lancet in Pearl on order and hope it comes in soon, it'll be a little brother to the nice Spearpoint Rainbow series I now have, they are nice knives to be sure!

Good luck on your search!!

If the price works for you, the Chris Reeve Ufaan would be super. If we knew your budget we could help a little better.

If you want something very different you may want to consider customizing a BM Mel Pardue. You can see one at http://www.knifeoutlet.com/recupero.htm with some filework and ivory scales. Something along this line would be super since it would be unique. I'll have a customized William Henry Persian on the site in a week or so. It will have abalone scales and plenty of file work. You can contact Frank Recupero to discuss his services at ats34@webtv.net. Frank specializes in customizing production knives and his work is excellent. Just a thought. Take care.

If you want tough, the CR Umfaan is perfect. I've heard about BM 330s that broke after some hard use. The WH knives are also very very nice. I handled some at the blade show and I was very impressed.

I have to agree with Fred at knife center-a Mel Pardue 350 is a small, strong, reliable folder that is sharp as a razor and easy to maintain.

I recently purchase a Stryker 905 from Fred and I tell it too is a terrific knife. Smaller then the 910, it is as tough and in Satin finish, a hell of a looker. I do recommend Tuff-Cloth...blade is prone to finger print marks.

If we use the price of the BM330 ($85 for wild guess, delivered) as a guide, I think the Chris Reeves and the William Henry knives are out of contention. They are great knives and would be a perfect knife gift, but double what you sound like you want to spend. In your price range I'd look at the following knives:

BM330 (no kinding!)
Case Copperlock (very good looking with many choices of handle material)
International Guide" series Berretta (no one ever mentions this 440C knife)
Boyd Prophet in Dendritic Cobalt (at $100 it's at the high end)
KaBar D2 (maybe too big, and not pretty, but great steel)
Kershaw Talon, G-10 or Titanium (about $85, little high)
Spyderco 39PBK Mini Dyad (two blades, little thick, real nice)
Spyderco -- any made with Carbon Fiber handle (lots of choices under $100)
Spyderco -- any of the Micarta models (less $$$ than the carbon fiber ones)

That should keep you busy and out of trouble for a while. Chasing these down won't be difficult. Any of the bigger dealers will have them. If you narow your search down try asking for an opinion of your short list. Good luck and have fun.

The best thing to do is to buy about ten different knives and be covered as far as getting gifts for a few years (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.)

Take a look at the Junglee Mini Tri-Point. Super light,Aus 10 steel, good blade profile, 3 screw pocket clip and a good buy under $50.00.
