Can anyone sell me on a new, guided sharpening system?

I currently use an Edge Pro Apex with ALL of the extras. The Slide Guide, Small Knife Attachment, Retractable Magnet, Bench Mount, and every stone under the sun.

I really like the system (especially after the upgrades), but there are some aspects that I don't feel are ideal. I don't like having to switch to my left arm to sharpen show side of knives. I'd prefer to use my right arm for everything. Knives occasionally shift on the platform, even with the retractable magnet upgrade. Getting a knife in the exact same position when switching sides can sometimes be tricky, depending on the blade's grind.

If I get a new system, I would like it to be able to use the same stones as the Edge Pro system. Aside from that, cost isn't much of a factor. I've been looking at systems from tsprof and hapstone.

I sharpen small traditional knives, and Swiss Army Knives by hand on stones, so I wouldn't need the new system to do that... But it WOULD need to be able to handle both small, modern blades (such as a Spyderco Dragonfly), and blades as long as a 10" chef knife.

TL; DR

I'm looking for a definitive upgrade over the Edge Pro Apex with ALL the extras.

It must be able to do everything the Edge Pro Apex can, while allowing me to sharpen both blades with my right arm, and doesn't allow the blade to shift.

I think a Hapstone R2+V8+Rail-Height-Adjuster covers all your needs.
I just got a TSProf Axicube ONE that looks way cool, but I have not used it yet.

Including the Scissor Attachment? I don't think many systems include that feature and it already lets you use your right hand for both blades.

Scissor attachment is meaningless to me.

The magnets don’t secure blades well enough for me not to have to hold the knife in place with one hand. That doesn’t allow me to sharpen the show side of knives without switching to my less dominant hand.

Hapstone R2 or the other-than-basic TSProf sharpeners should please you. I have Hapstone R2 and TSProf K03, and with either, you just clamp and go. I've used them for knives even longer than 10", with no issues. They are also much more solidly anchored than the EdgePro, or so I've heard.

I've been hand sharpening for years now, but it's never been something I actually enjoy doing. A while back I started doing a lot of research on different fixed angle sharpeners, and from what I've found the Kadet Pro is the best of the bunch. At least in terms of home gamer units. The K03 is arguably better, but it's also HUGE by comparison. The only real problem with the Kadet Pro is availability. It's pretty much sold out everywhere constantly. You can find the Nero no problem, but in my opinion the angle adjustment is just too much of a downgrade. Tried a couple of other units over the years, but I found most of them lacking in one way or another (usually stability). Anyway, that would be my recommendation if you don't mind scouring the internet to find one. Took nearly 6 months to find mine.

Yeah, I meant the Scissor Attachment is secure enough to use only one hand. You emphasized ALL the accessories so I thought maybe you wanted a system with a scissor feature which seems pretty unusual. Since you don't use it that's irrelevant however.

I had trouble getting a large chef knife to sharpen properly and had to keep un clamping it to move the knife to another spot to sharpen. I have the apex and it is a lot easier to move a long knife on the table to sharpen the whole length. The hapstone was a friend of mine and he sold it and convinced me to get a knock of edge pro. The knock off was faster for me than the hapstone. I just upgraded from the knock off to the actual apex and it is even faster for me. Not having to un clamp a knife to get the burr to form across the whole edge before flipping to the other side is a real time saver for me.

He does not remember which one it was but knowing him it was probably the cheapest one they make.

This is just my assessment but you may have different results.

I love touching up the knives while watching tv and hockey 🏒 but i do not have as much time as I used too have.

The Hapstone M3 and V8 have magnetic tables. I am not aware of a non-magnetic table for the Hapstones. I imagine it is indeed easier to quickly reposition the blade on a non-magnetic Edge Pro table.

The M3 and V8 tables and the R2 clamps will all fit on the same Hapstone base. It is easy to swap them, although not as easy as on a Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust.

I do not know if TSProf has tables for any of their sharpeners.

The magnets are not intended to allow you to sharpen a blade without holding it.
If you can only use one hand, then the Edge Pro probably isn't the best choice in tools.

As we used to call the battle of the titans, the same representatives are in the ring:
Hapstone
TSProf
Edge Pro

All of them share the same basic model of stone holders, you don't have to worry about that.
Hapstone is definitely in the lead, because of the modularity, you can install both clamps and magnetic module for knives, and a lot of other modules from chisels to scissors, and soon will be released a knife attachment for leather.

TSProf - separately I will take away as this product is produced in Russia, and Hapstone in Ukraine, words are superfluous.
And this is the only factor why I would not look towards TSProf. In all other respects it is a worthy opponent of Hapstone.

Edge Pro - a legendary classic, but the magnets are already in the past.

Let me know if you need any additional help.
Regards,Mario.

Why don't folks discuss the Poland made systems?

Kazak Pro. Aren't they also in the heavy hitter category?

I've read someone discussing his but don't remember who. So I know there's people on here that own one. Yet they never bring it up.

I absolutely love my Kazak model 100, use it almost daily. Zero complaints but just FYI it is on the large side 👍

I have the K03 and I agree. The higher end systems are huge.

I have nowhere I can leave the system assembled. Like a work station type deal.

So before the days use. I pull it out the crate. Set it up and get my nest going. After I'm finished. It gets a wipe down and back into the crate it goes.

The spot I use it is the kitchen table and it can't stay on the kitchen table.

I have everything organized as way of stones and everything else I use. Using a tackle box for lures.

I have just enough space in for a dedicated sharpening bench. A good friend of mine recently retired from the millwrights and offered to build me a bench/sharpening table. I had him build it a little higher than a standard work bench, I'm a little on the tall side and sharpening on my previous bench had me hunched over. Currently have my Kakbritva Luch, kazak 100 set up and ready to go. And my electric whetstone machine "like a Tormek" on the bottom shelf in case of a major reprofile. But back to the Kazak I have owned a couple other guided systems and this one has been the best. The rotating assembly is very precise, reads zero both sides after flipping. Clamps that come with it just work on everything I have put in them. The angle adjustment requires no tools and stays exactly where you put it. Very solid and well thought out. 20240206_175519.jpg
