i have a cheapo fillet knife...china made schrade...looking to upgrade...any suggestions?

i use my fillet knife now to clean silver screen and gristle/fat from deer meat...

You'll need to provide a budget and personal preferences - like a handle material for example - before anyone can really offer suggestions.

Marttiini knives fishing line, birch or rubberised handle, around 25$.

Don't know if they are still considered "good" but I've always liked the Rapalla filet knife.
The Buck and the folding Opinel filet knife would tie for my second choice.

I have a Case filet knife and I use it for the reason you do. I think I paid less than $20.00 for it.

I've always used Marttiini fillet knives for most part. But after getting kabar fillet never buying another brand unless going custom. Kabar fillet has best handle/flex/price for me. I can't tell any difference in performance of edge retention on any of these "cheap" fillet knives steels either ,so would just go with what you think would be best in hand/blade design\flex what have you. I could live with any of them. I'm going to get a custom fillet at some point. If you go on custom maker exchange believe they can be had for $75-100 with steels like ats-34.

The Buck Clearwater fillet knives look like a good knife for the money.

Of course my favorite would be the White River Knives Traditional Cork fillet knives. Over your budget (and mine at the moment), but I love the classic look to them

You can find the USA made fillet knives on the big auction site

Look for: USA Schrade Fillet

The blade and sheath were made in the Ellenville, New York USA Schrade factory prior to their bankruptcy in 2004. The handles were attached at a later date.

Tang is stamped "Schrade+, USA LTD"
12" overall. 7" stainless Schrade+ steel blade.
Full tang.
Light Pakkawood Wood handles.
Lanyard hole.
Brown leather belt sheath.

Victorinox makes a number of filet knives. They are many chef's preferred maker and often around $20. I have had a Marttiini filet knife but it did not hold an edge as well as I would have liked.

How about $55 for a Hess Knifeworks Mackinaw Fillet. Grey Diamond wood handle and Hess's guarrantee.

I have one I got from Victorinox outlet in ct and it is perfect. Rubberized type handle, yellow, and swiss stainless super sharp and I dont think more than 10-20 bucks.
