Can anyone tell me about this knife???

A friend of mine found this knife in his uncles WW II trunk. We know he was stationed in Germany for some time. Very well made, The blade is 6" long and overall 13.75" straight through that is. any info or hints would be great.

The name on the blade is J.HERBST I thied to search it, but all I found was modern makers.

I found it.Duh!!Sometimes I wake up brain dead for the first couple hours,must be the wife that is 10 yrs younger than me.God I love her!!
