Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what this knife is worth?

http://www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=2165

It does have the Gerber BMF look, which I do like. But I would like to hear from you guys about this knife, if anyone used it. From what I've seen you guys are usually spending a lot more in a knife, and are used to standards that I'm fairly sure this knife will not meet. But instead of assuming this or that, I'd rather hear it from knowledgable and experienced guys like you. Thanks for any help/infos.

i'd be worried about buying anything from someone who can't even spell the product name correctly

"440 stainless" isn't very specific either

there is one on eBay at $16 right now, so the price probably isn't too far off...

If the retailer is charging $19.99 then tha manufacturer made it for a whole lot less. Some of that will be labor costs but also there are materials & design compromises. It uses 440A steel probably, which is stain-resistant but not very strong. So the edge will be likely to chip or deform (depending on how hard it is heat-treated to) with hard use. Probably a stick-tang, so heavy prying could break the knife at the juncture between handle & blade. What are you intending to use it for? If you specify your needs then I'm sure this group can recommend a better value in your price range. Or if you just want something cheap & cool-looking to keep by the nightstand in case of prowlers, that knife should do fine.

Life is to short to carry a cheap knife and I'm not talking about price. There are lots of "good" inexpensive knives, but that one isn't one of them.

Thanks guys. I had a bad feeling about that knife and I'm actually glad that I asked you about it before to buy it. To tell the truth the only thing I did like about it was it's look.

I'm looking for a "fairly large" knife with a blade around 7 or 8 inches long. It will mostly be used for camping and the such, digging, choping, and whatever else the situation requires. I need something strong that can be used for a variety of things... yet, the look of the knife is pretty important to me. I have been going over the forum for the last 2 days, but I'm not very familiar with fixed blades so I cannot tell you wich style I'm after (I do not know the knives names) :o .
I love the Gerber BMF look, but I'm not ready to spend $300 on a knife, at least not if I'm going to use it.

I'm looking to spend around $50, but if you think a knife that is more expensive than that really is worth it, feel free to let me know. Links to pictures of the knife would be much appreciated.

I saved a picture from this forum and marked some knives that I think look cool so you get a better idea of the look I'm after (See below), but i'm really open to ideas. Thanks for the help! ;)

I hope the person I "stole" this picture from will pardon me... nice collection by the way!

the ones to the left of the S&Ws are KaBars and aren't too horribly expensive

under that are the Beckers, BK-9 and BK-7... i'm not much for them, but they get a lot of praise here, and are pretty cheap

I've read in several descriptions of knife steels (I am by no means an expert) that if a seller or manufacturer doesn't list the the specific steel, in this case "440" it may be the cheaper 440A vs 440C or better. Don't ask me the difference I've just read that 440A isn't the best steel out there. You can do a search with your search engine and find out what you need. I personally wouldn't waste $20 for that one though. Buy a name brand with quality materials. You'll be happier in the long run.

I think for that style of knife and price range, it would be hard to beat a carbon-steel U.S.M.C. knife, either from Camillus or Ka-Bar.

You might also check out the Buck Nighthawk. Or the Buck Special, Pathfinder, or Woodsman. I think any of these are under $50.

Check out the US made Ontario Marine Combat knife Model # ON498 at around $40.00. It may be just what you're looking for. You might also be interested in Ontarios models #ONFF6 and # ONSP1, all are "good" knives in your price range.

This one looks good --Fusion Jungle Primitive (Black)-- ,but it is a piece of carp.

This is the one I got not too long ago, --Black KA-BAR Cutlass Machete-- $35.00 from ebay, I am planning to use if on my 4wheeling trip to clear obstacle.

Thanks all for you great help and advices.

I think I'll go for a BK-7. It did not look that "sexy" to me the first time I've seen it. But more I look at it, more I like it! I'm currently looking for a company that sells them for a good price and would ship them to europe. I've found this one on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/BK7-CAMILLUS-BE...ryZ63793QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
$50 for the knife and $20 for shipping. I doubt I'll find a better price than this. Considering the price it cost to get it shipped to me, I'm starting to think that I should buy a much more expensive knife! :D

Anyways, thank you guys, you've been very helpful!

Hi damien,

it really depends on what you want your knife for... if its looks alone, then something that is made of inferior steel will probably suffice, but if its for performance, you simply cannot judge this by a knifes looks... get something that will last....

As you didn't state that money was an issue... look for Busse knives or CRK knives :p :D

They will last you a life time
