Buck is aware of these knock offs..
i think they have bought some then sent letters out..
i seem to recall reading some place that they said they make these on orders for whom they think are the owners of a "buck" or "male deer" company of some kind and not as a knock off... but the way it was worded smelled of lawer talk to avoid trade actions...
what could you do if it were you?

Actually, Buck is trying to do something about it, and yes, they are very aware of the products that are coming out of other nations. It isn't that easy to handle the Chinese and their operations. Just witness the proliferation of stolen designs that are readily available on the open market.

At a recent gunshow in Oregon, a bunch of knock-offs that looked like a Buck 112 showed up and were sold for $5. Fit and finish were very good. Right side of the blade said 'Tomahawk', left side XL0562 Stainless, China.

Also, there is a notable Trailmaster fake which is being pushed by M-Tech. The handle looks just like the original and the blade would fool some people most of the time. Price range was around $20. Fit and finish look decent on this knife. Black baked-on coating in addition to a .25+ blade housed in a cheap sheath: they went like hot-cakes. The wholesale price for this knife is less than $12.

It is a shame that these fakes are hurting us even though they are of reasonable quality. The designs are stolen. Better just support Buck by purchasing a knife that is made in the USA, although I am told that Buck does have an operation in the Orient that is allowing costs to be kept at a minimum. What a bizarre world we live in.

China's refusal to honor intellectual property rights and punish those stealing is a massive problem not likely to go away. The Chinese industrial complex is run and segmented like principalities owned by warlords. The fact that their military is a major manufacture of all kinds of things from tanks to refrigerators illustrates this problem. Too much easy money for the taking. Tack on the pegging of the Yuan to the dollar for the resulting export advantage and you have a viscous circle with company like Buck, Spyderco, and Boker having to produce in China to be competitive on price.

Its even worse…the resulting trade deficits rack up Billions if not Trillions by now in excess dollars for China. Well guess what they do with those dollars…they buy U.S. gov’t debt and companies around the world. Yep, China’s willingness to buy low interest US debt instruments subsidizes low interest rates for all of us in this country…amazing little fact. And that affects everything from credit card rates to what you house loan goes for. Well, that’s good…no, not really. We know an addiction to debt usually ends up with the other guy owning all your stuff.

So we Americans are addicted to cheap Chinese goods and the also benefit from lower interest rates. The cost is American jobs and transfers of wealth only rivaled by our other addiction imported oil.

Just remember we need change…the Dem’s keep telling me so.:jerkit:

I just do everything I can not to buy Chinese if possible. As posted above, Chinese goods quality can be quite good. The Boker Lord in my pocket is a 110 size drop point lock back with a Damascus blade and burled wood inlay, NS bolsters…made in China (a gift from a friend btw) and it’s absolutely competitive in quality and is about $35 on eBay. I guess there-in lies one of the main problems.:grumpy:

Need change? But, that's all I have now! Aha, now we know why the knock-offs sell, sullying the name of the company we hold so dear - no one has buck$ for Bucks any more!

All too true on all counts although we continue to sell product even in this weird economy. I was down Smoky for Rep Days signing knives and sold a pretty good mix between the USA stuff and the import stuff.

I also took a nice mule deer last week and got to field test a new hunting concept we are introducing at Shot Show next year. Worked like a champ however I did have some small changes to suggest when I got back. (Change-abilty is the beauty of laser cutting blades)

We will be ready to give a preview in another month or so but just know that 95% of our new products for 2009 are US made and we are excited about that.

CJ, I look forward to hearing more about this new "hunting concept". Congrats on the mule deer. I want to do that next year.

I refuse to buy chicom made knock-off but can see where some folks might because of $$. As a kid I refused to buy japanese knives but now I don't bat an eye to buy a Japanese shotgun or rifle.

"...95% of our new products for 2009 are US made ..."
- CJ Buck

That's simply the most patriotic thing to do CJ!
It's good for Buck and good news for the working American as a whole...
I cannot tell you just how equally excited I am about this return to American craftsmanship (if that still exist??!) and givin' the jobs to a God fearing people who have a basic understanding of right from wrong.

CJ,
Of all the posts you have made on this forum over the years, I like this one the best!!!
I hope you will soon be able to change the 95% figure to 100%. I remember your 2003statement that this was your goal made during the BCCI 15 year anniversary celebration in El Cajon. You are well on the way to making that goal a reality and I am most appreciative.
Best wishes,
Larry

Thanks for that info, CJ! Just one more reason why Buck is my favorite knife manufacturer and always will be.

that is welcome news CJ!
now what is this i hear of a lot of new
Limited Editions coming out this year? ;)
first look saved for shot show?
or can we have a sneek peek here? :D :D

CJ,

95% is fantastic. I sure am glad to see the transition back to good ole USA made knives. I know we'll all be pleased when that figure is 100%!

Take care,
John
