Can Canoes Cross the Atlantic? It's Possible with Enough Will Power

About a month ago, I was admiring a Rough Rider canoe photo posted by Wheeler80. Besides having a soft spot in my heart (and head?) for canoes, Bill's had RR's "gunstock checked brown bone" covers that I find to be exceedingly appealing. Soon thereafter, Will Power sent me an email offering to gift me an identical canoe (if he could find it), since he had never "taken to" the canoe pattern. I was happy to accept his generous offer!

Will warned me that it might take a while for his package to reach me because the Finland Post Office was striking. But a couple of weeks ago, a box arrived in my mailbox.

As you can see, it was quite a festive box, with illustrations of winter birds that looked similar to those I know, but definitely not my familiar juncoes, nuthatches, chickadees, cardinals, etc. Just receiving the box was exciting, since I'd never gotten mail from Finland before! Inside was a familiar Rough Rider knife box holding the beautiful gunstock checked canoe.

I hope you can see from my amateur photos how attractive the checked bone is; it reminds me of scratting taken to its limit. Will also included a postcard of an old-fashioned picnic in a birch grove; he wrote a kind note on the back that I certainly appreciate.

But Will also included a totally unexpected item in the package! In the Rough Rider box with some packing peanuts and the RR canoe was a striking little Hen and Rooster mini-canoe or butterbean pattern with gorgeous green pick bone covers!

What a superb surprise! That beautiful green butterbean represents a number of firsts for me: my first Hen & Rooster, my first knife made in Solingen Germany, my first butterbean, and my first single-spring canoe!!

So thank you very much, Will, for your incredible generosity; two astounding canoes in one package! Will has mentioned the long hours of darkness at this time of year in Finland, but he certainly seems like a source of sunshine to me!

I'd welcome any photos of canoes any of you would like to post here, especially Rough Rider or Hen & Rooster models.

5k Q that canoe in gunstock is stunning is that custom or a regular pattern rr? And the hen and rooster is super nice conceals on both of them.

Will, your awesome!! Two beautiful knives indeed! I really like the gunstock work on the RR and the Hen and Rooster butterbean is a green gem! For some reason the picture in the birch grove really appeals to my sense of life. GT ....you are one worthy gent!!! Well done and thanks for the smile:D

Generosity strikes again here on the Traditional Forum  These stories make my day.

Merry Christmas!

What's the wee stone beastie?
You can say that again, scrteened porch!! :D
That's a little stone bear. My wife has 5 of those "stylized" stone bears in various sizes and materials. Not sure what stone the one pictured is. She has another one just a bit bigger, made from Petoskey stone; I think it's beautiful, and it appears below in the pic of a Vic Explorer I got at a recent gun & knife show. She also has a set of 3 in different sizes (Papa, Mama, and Baby, with the largest as big as a dinner plate and the smallest about 4" long and high) made of a material that reminds me a little of marble, but I doubt if that's what it is. Robin (Pipestone) says that those carved bears are Native American fetishes; pretty interesting.

Two gorgeous knives! Love that green bone.
Thanks, Wurrwulf. :) I didn't think I was a big fan of green knives that I've seen here, but having that Hen & Rooster green pick bone in hand sure has adjusted my attitude toward green knives! :o

Thanks, gonebad. :) Rough Rider has a whole series of patterns in gunstock checked bone. I bought a copperhead with gunstock checked handles at a gun show once; I was mesmerized by the covers, but the knife was too big for me to comfortable carry, so it became a prize in a GAW. In the Rough Rider thread recently, someone (tstaut??) posted a photo of some of his RR and Colt Barlows, one of which was a gunstock checked bone. I think cchu recently posted a mini-Barlow there with the same covers, too. Just to give some indication of how much I like those covers, here's a pic of a feeble attempt I made at whittling a congress knife; you can see that I tried to put real low resolution checkered handles on it.

Very nice gesture from Will, congratulations GT  That same model was my first RR, I gifted it to another member here. Enjoy it in good health GT :)

GT I'm very happy indeed they are now in appreciative hands.

They don't look too bad I must say :D:D Despite the ocean voyage

Thanks, Will

Love the RR canoe pattern! The gun stock checkering was extremely well done for such an inexpensive knife! 5k Q, it looks fantastic! Will, you're certainly a "good egg", and that was darned nice of you!
I just ordered a RR canoe with the Armor Hide Bone scales, which I really like. I'll post photos of the actual knife when it arrives. I hope it's as well done as the Gunstock Checkered scales!

5K Qs , nice beasties. Yes the bear is a popular figure for the stone carvings .
I'd like to know the proper name for the bear 's stone because it's pattern is a fine example of the grains you find in steel and other metals. Would be nice for my little collection of creatures.

mete, are you referring to the bear in post #8? The only name I know for that "stone" (I think it's actually fossilized coral) is Petoskey stone. Here's a link to more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petoskey_stone
