Can detent balls fall out of their hole?

Only happened to me once, out of what must be a hundred knives at this point, and it was some nameless maker knockoff. Never happened with a known brand knife of any price point, so it must be rare if the construction is even adequate.

My XM-18 fatty suddenly had no detent, the blade just flopped about. Sent it back to Hinderer and was back fixed up perfect in less than two weeks. All it cost was postage to send.

I had it happen on a Buck/Strider folder. Sent it back to Buck, and they replaced the whole liner. Never had a problem after that.

Only knife I ever had lose a detent ball was a Hinderer. It was an XM18 skinner "covid" assembled by Rick himself in 2020. I just returned the knife as I lost interest in it instantly.

So if the ball is lost: the blade will simply not stay in place?

Yes, it can happen. This is a serious defect, and you should contact customer support for the brand.

I have a Dividend M390 that had the detent pressed into the liner. I tapped it out with a punch and reseated it, it's held ever since. I plan to send it in one day because I suspect it won't hold forever.

Only happened once but it was the torch that I was using to flame anodize it. Tighten down the pivot to keep it shut then lock tight it in place.

The detent ball popped out on my ZT 0609.
Rather than sending it in, I put it back in its place with a bit of red LocTite.
It’s holding up well so far.

My Lionsteel Kur has no balls out of the box. Sloppiest flipper I own; and I can't send it back because Canada, eh.
