Im wondering can a DMT coarse be able to sharpen carbon steel, specifically blue steel #1 without mangling the edge because the diamond stone is so hard. With high resistant steel I don't see a problem.

The stone will be needed to flatten a shapton 1k, 5k and fix dents and chips in blue steel number 1.

Diamond can sharpen that steel. I would not use your diamond stone to flatten any stone. As this will ruin the diamond layer. I'd get a Norton combination crystallon stone to flatten with. Use the coarse first with water and last the fine side when it's looking close to level. DM

The coarse DMT isn't really coarse enough for removing serious chips and it's not recommended for flattening hard waterstones like the Shaptons. Another option would be to get urself a Shapton 220 for chip removal and some SiC grit and a sheet of glass for flattening.

You could also flatten using wet/dry sand paper, wrapped around something flat. DM

Wet/dry will turn into smooth paper if used on a Shapton stone.

There are some fairly good cheaper diamond plates but in the end the name brands do best. The DMT XXC can be had for about $60 and will easily handle all the tasks listed. Ideally, I would recommend the Atoma 400 as it actually fits your progression and works to flatten, it's pricy though. The problem you will have with other coarser plates is the transition from plate to 1k. The Pro 1k is powerful but on a chisel the 120-140 grit to 1000 grit jump might be near impossible at times.

atoma 400 is out of my budget. What stone in DMT line or another brand is similar in grit to the 400 atoma (Is this american rating or japanese rating)?

I would guess a 8 inch dmt stone would work to lap a shapton. Can a 6 inch work?

It can but only the XXC 120 mesh, all other DMT stones are not rated for lapping. The tough part is that the 120 to 1k jump is often too much for the waterstones to handle. You would need to add the Shapton 320 in order to bridge the gap, this is why I recommend the Atoma 400, it's the only coarse waterstone that's fine enough to be used before a 1k stone yet still has the ability to lap fine waterstones. The cost may seem high until you realize that it's the most cost effective option when you need both a coarse stone and lapping plate.
