Hi,

I will be on a business trip to Seattle in a few days and wonder whether I could buy a knife to take it home to Germany.

I saw this thread which says that somehow fixed blades are illegal in Seattle:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/793827-No-fixed-blades-in-Seattle-Why?highlight=seattle

Could someone advise what exactly is forbidden? I mean is it perperhaps only forbidden to carry a knife that you can easily access?

So if I would want to buy some in a shop, put it into a somehow closed/sealed (?) box, carry to the hotel, put it in the luggage and take it to the airport - would that be legal?

Thanks, Thomasch

p.s.: Will try to look for some outdoor knives, some thing like Ka-Bar Becke 2 or 9, Ontario RTAK, ESEE Junglas. In case my intent is legel, I would also like some tips for a shop - will actually do another post in other section right away to ask..

I can't address German law, but from the US end putting a knife in your checked luggage is completely legal.

Thanks AR-Trvlr - Germany is no problem, I'm more concerned about carrying the knife within Seattle because of the post I linked..

What type of knife?

Kitchen? Dagger?

If you purchase a knife, and leave it in the originalbpackaging, and put it in your checked luggage I don't forsee any trouble at all.

When I walk around in Seattle, I carry smaller pocket knives that I would at home. Though, I still may have a gun in a holster under my shirt. It is funny that I can carry a loaded gun, but have to limit my self to a small folder at the same time!

Thanks Bigfattyt!

I think I also just found the important law phrase - should be Seattle Municipal Code section 12A.14.010 I guess:
a dangerous knife means any fixed-blade knife and any other knife having a blade more than three and one-half inches (3 1/2″) in length.

[..]

The proscriptions of Section 12A.14.080 B relating to dangerous knives shall not apply to:

[..]

C. Any person carrying such knife in a secure wrapper or in a tool box while traveling from the place of purchase, from or to a place of repair, or from or to such person’s home or place of business, or in moving from one (1) place of abode or business to another, or while in such person’s place of abode or fixed place of business.
So should be safe then also for big outdoor fixed knife like Ka-Bar Becke 2 or 9, Ontario RTAK, ESEE Junglas...

Yeah - we have similar funny stuff over here...
Balisongs are forbidden to *possess*, as are nunchuks (even trainers from soft foam!) and Shuriken.. These are real dangerous weapons and often used in crimes, right?
