This may be one of the oddest post that I will ever post but it has reason behind it.

I am a college student and with the 7 girls for every 2 guy ratio, I find myself surrounded by a bunch of people who are knife squeamish so I have switched EDCs for when I am on campus to a Kershaw Nakamura. It is a lot less intimidating than many of my other EDCs and it has a flash of style and elegance. I was wondering how far could I push it without overdoing it since I am usually on campus for 12 hours ish and I find little time for me to go back to get my regular EDC. I figure since the steel is the same as a San Mai SOG Vulcan I could push it far but I am curious if anyone knows how far

For those unfamiliar with the Nakamura, here are some specs

It has San Mai steel (vg10 clad with 420js)
Quince wood handle
Mokume damascus bolsters (19 layers I think)
Liner Lock
0 blade play

Also, a side note, despite being new to this forum, I know a reasonable amount about knives. I am mainly wondering if this could pass for a good edc so I don't have to go back for my S30V Paramilitary 2. (Also if it helps, where I live is too close to the sea for D2 to survive a week without showing signs of rust. I clean my paramilitary 2 every week.)

You can't just ask will this work for "EDC" without explaining what your ED is. I carry a ZT 0300 most days just because I can. I work in an office and my Spyderco bug on my keychain would probably be good enough. I also carry a Leatherman Squirt every day and also usually a Skyline or Storm II or Skyline and Storm II along with the main knife. Somedays I also carry a Izula or Becker Necker in my back pocket.. and somedays that and also a SOG Powerassist multitool.

Do I need ANY of that? NOPE.. I work in an office in IT. I do it partly out of rebellion. I work for a nonprofit and I got sick of getting treated like a redneck [particularly when I work in our Portland office] for moving from Montana where I went to university. For many many years I just carried a Blur and the Leatherman. But after all the remarks I decided to embrace the stereotype and now walk around like a roving cutlery shop :)

That's gonna end up as someones signature :D

Maybe mine. I like the sentiment!

that quote made my day. My normal edc is a sypderco paramilitary 2. I use my EDC for cutting cardboard. paper, paracord, rope, and as self defense when I walk through bad areas every morning and night(but the self defense part is the least of my concerns since I have fought using a folding case muskrat before.) I basically dog it out in an urban/port enviroment.

I really like the mix of wood and steel. I wish Kershaw made more US knives that had wood or were easy to rescale. Sometime this year I'm getting a mini mill for more accurately milling out the speedsafe cutouts but my next big tool purchase is stuff for aluminum anodizing.

So you don't really use your knife for anything but cutting everyday items yet you aren't sure it's tough enough? Maybe I dont understand your situation, but it seems like a non-issue. What would you be doing on campus that you are afraid you'd break the knife?

I cut a lot of hard plastic. May not seem like much but I chipped a few blades doing it before. I know san mai is tought but can it be dogged out cutting piercing and taking shock (I seem to be a magnet for cars running red lights when i am walking) like a paramilitary 2 or another good quality edc

Also, i use my knives as mini screw drivers if I edc. I forgot about this till I pulled out my cigar lighter. I use the knife to adjust the flame and bleed lights.

+1 A classic SAK on your keychain would solve the problem.

PS- That Kershaw looks beautiful! Great lines, and awesome grains!

Sounds like you need a multi-tool

Honestly I do buy I prefer just using a knife. Simplicity can be achieved through quality. I use a blade for everything from cutting stripping screwing piercing defense etc. I like having the ability to pull and open a knife faster than a switchblade. A feel a multitool will be superfluous

that one isnt mine but mine looks 100% like that. I just used some metal polished and worked hard on it and it looks 100% like that. beautiful knife that i can pull without someone getting concerned

If its legal to carry on campus then carrry whatever you want. Who cares what people think. Any girl that gets squemish at the sight of a blade is the wrong girl in my opinion. With so few guys on campus id like to be known as the one with the big knife.

That knife thomas just posted is pretty sweet looking.

Are there any wrong girls in college?

Yes, i hate extreem girly sheltered girls i guess you could say. Like my girlfriend is very girly but she likes that i carry knives and has her own knives. She understands my love for blades and guns and everything else a man would have an addiction for. Shes the cool kind of girl thats still hot lol.
