Can I edc and auto in texas if I am in the army. Also, what are good automatics. I have been looking at a microtech socom and I want it desperatly but its discontinued. I am also looking at the benchmade afo. What do you guys think.

Microtech makes some of the best production autos. I like the Presidio 5000. For safety reasons, I don't recommend carrying a pushbutton auto without a sheath.

A cursory look at Texas knife laws shows that you're limited to a 5.5" blade (not a problem) and no auto or balis. Bummer.

I don't really know Texas blade laws but as far as I know as long as you are active duty military you can carry an auto in the US. For more answers on Texas you should check out the Knife Law specific forum.
Also just some food for thought but you might want to think about how much you trust the mechanism to open it when you really need it.

Be aware that in Texas, you will find different knife laws in different cities and municipalities.

San Antonio for example, has laws against carrying any knife with a locking blade.

That does not sound correct. I do believe you can purchase if you are active military, but carrying it must pertain in someway to your MOS.

Yep, from what I'm reading, you can buy and own one, and even keep one in your vehicle or home, buy you can't carry it otherwise on your person.

You need to ask the Army. It won't matter what the State of Texas thinks if you get busted leaving and entering the base.

FWIW -- lots of cops and paramedics carry autos. I'm not sure how it would effect armed services personel.

oops. Sorry. That does sound like it makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying.

Some states allow autos for police and military carrying out their duties. Off duty or not performing official duties it is illegal.

Here's the kicker - I've found that very few police officers actually know what the knife laws actually are in Texas. So even if you are carrying something legal you may still be cited and have to go to the time and expense of going before a judge to prove your case. My rule of thumb - if in doubt, leave it at home.

your base commander dictates the weapons you carry. on duty if your commander says you can carry 5 automatics, he will issue orders to when & where you can carry. it would'nt be good to be off duty in a bar & get caught with an auto. remember in most cases u.s. military law supercedes state laws.does'nt mean you can go to town & cut up a bunch of drunks. even if your commanding base general o.k.s autos he will still leave the final decision up to your immediate commander. in combat just about anything goes but once again your immediate commander has the basic say. at least that was the way it was when i was in marines.

That is true in every state of this union! I have asked (many) officers of the law, in my city (friends), about laws pertaining to "autos", if you have a carry permit for firearms?, as it turns out they admit that they have zero clue. The "switch blade law" is a Federal Law in effect since who knows when? West Side Story? So it's a gamble at best. I have, and have had, many autos and switch blades(legal to buy, sell, and own here!) just not outside your property! I don't think I want to be in court, after something bad (not even knife related, not even my doing) goes down, and I'm found with a "SWITCHBLADE"

How many of you guys actually have gotten harassed by police officers about a pocket knife anyways? To be honest, as long as you're not being an idiot or doing something else illegal to attract attention, I don't see having much of a problem carrying ANY kind of knife. They'd have to have some reason to single you out, and unless you're flipping the blade out in front of their face or trying to get through security, you shouldn't have much of a problem anywhere you go.

Move to Florida and get a CCW license. You could then.

Or, move to oregon. Here, you can carry an auto as long as its visible (ie pocket clip :) ). Then again, I got tired of carrying an auto, people ohandah, wanna play with it, or freak out. But I'm also not in the military.

DennisStrickland steered you in the correct direction. Just because you are in the military services/firefighter/LEO does not automatically give you license to purchase and carry an automatic knife. It must first be approved by your commanding officer and must be documented. In many cases they will not allow you to have one unless they specifically issue it to you and In most cases they will not allow you to carry it at will.

when entering court houses & offices where auto liscenses are issued we are required to leave our knives in our cars in austin, tex. i've had some mighty big flippers seen by officers. most texas police are'nt interested in what knife you're carrying as you as you are not breaking laws. in texas it's not illegal to purchase or own autos --just do'nt carry them on your person in public. personally i have zero interest in autos since the assisted openers & my favorite --flippers are plenty fast. i'm of the opinion that increases in gadjets only increases chance of failure in folders.
