Can I fix this knife?

Picked up this micarta Buck 500 knife at the flea market last month. It was thrown in as a freebie along with a Ranger I purchased. Biggest problem is the spring is missing. Is it possible for me to put a new spring in it or is that something that had to be done when the knife was built. I have big hands and the 500's feel right to me. Straighten out the badly sharpened edge, give it a little spit shine and this knife could provide me with many years of useful service if the spring can be fixed. Even in its uncared for old age I think it is a classically good looking knife.

Citing a conversation I had a couple of weeks ago with Randy in CS, I would say there's a very good chance the factory can repair that.

Give them a call.

It is my understanding that springs for that model will be available, and they could have it cleaned up and back to you in almost new condition.

Like I said, though, don't take my word as gospel, do call the factory.

(Oh, and if you did have that spring available, and you knew what you were doing, then yes, you could repair it. Requires disassembly.)

Well, I didn't think about that, sending it back for warranty & spa treatment. Never done it before.
If the knife has to be disassembled, it's beyond me anyways. Other than the spring and edge, it's better than it looks in the pictures.

I agree, send it in for a spa treatment and repair, make sure you send it ATT. Joe Houser, and write a short letter explaining what you want to do. If your not specific they have a way of scrapping what you have and sending you a comparable substitute.

Don't worry, they can fix it easily and most likely would have to be disassembled. Plus, yours has a blade of 440C which really doesn't show much wear just neglect and abuse. DM

Yeah, it'll be a beauty when you get it back, micarta looks to be in great shape and they will polish it all up. Possible pits(but doubt it) in the blade, but better than it is now for sure.
