What's up guys? I live on the opposite side of the country as my twin brother. I got him a kukri knife for his (our) birthday, and he said he didn't want it until I could give it to him in person. I also made a custom kydex sheath to go with it. I spent a lot of time making this sheath, as well as looking for a kukri that I think would serve him well. Tomorrow I am flying home to Tennessee, and will be seeing him then. My question is; can I pack a kukri blade in with my 'checked' luggage these days? It would be a real shame if TSA keeps it.

Any input would be awesome. Thanks

I flew recently with checked knives without issues. If they are checked you are allowed to have them. However......that DOESN'T mean that they won't be stolen while your bag is "inspected". If the knife means a lot to you then I would ship it ahead and have him hold it. I don't trust the airlines at all, but that is just me.

Yes, I believe you can carry it in your checked luggage. But there's a chance it will be stolen.

I trust the Postal Service more than baggage handlers, TSA agents, and random people in airports.

What Ernie said....you can check in with guns, knives, fishing poles or surfboards....doesn't mean they will be there when you pick up your checked bags...once had my checked bag with my handgun ARRIVE!!! two hours before me at the airport and just sitting outside the Baggage Claim office waiting for someone to "come and get me"...and yes I DO arrive at the airport that early....

I don't trust the TSA I have had friends and relatives get things stolen from them when the bags were "inspected" on multiple occasions. I would ship the knife by mail, you have a significantly higher chance of it arriving at the destination. This is assuming it is allowed in the checked luggage, I would look into that yourself before relying on advice on people on the internet when your dealing with something like this.

I travel with 20-40 custom straight razors in my checked luggage all the time.
At times I have a Yanagi and a couple Gyotos along with me as well.
In Europe and in the US.
I've never had any issues with that.

Don't do it!

I checked a bag once with a SAK, and and not only the SAK disappeared, but the 8X30 Steiner binoculars that was in the bag also was gone. The airline tried to down play it but I called the police to report the theft immediately. Now I don't travel with anything that I can't replace at the next Walmart. Valuables get hand carried or shipped ahead. Signature confirmation and insured.

Either you sell razors or you're a werewolf ;)

You can take large knives with you in your checked luggage, but there is always the risk of theft.

Meh, just a very enthusiastic hobbyist attending razorcons at times.
As I spend so much time on US based forums, I will have to travel a wee bit to meet up with fellow straight razor afficionados:)

And us knife-nuts really don't like going to meetups empty handed!

Even though razors aren't my thing at the moment, I understand completely, believe me :)

Pack in up in a USPS box with signature confirmation and rest assured your hard work won't be stolen.

Go to your local P.O. They have MANY sizes that you can pick from in Priority Mail boxes, flat rate as well as express. Just pick out a size for your long knife; they have it, and take the box home (free) and pack it well. Then bring it back labeled, packed well, and taped well. Then send signature confirmation and insure it for what it cost you. It will get there.
And forget the airline luggage bit. It is sort of a free buffet for baggage handlers.
Of course, some of them are good guys; perhaps most are. But it only takes ONE bad apple to steal that precious gift.
Sonnydaze...with lots of happy experience with USPS mailing of expensive blades...and never a loss...yet.
From California to Tennessee will likely take three days travel. No problem. Send it early.
Happy birthday.

My brother used to work for the airlines. (Dulles airport) but quit because the tsa are "a bunch of power hungry thieving idiots" lol and when we use to fly standby, he used to tell me never EVER pack anything important in your checked luggage. Bunch of low life scum bags/perverts stealing womens underwear and the like bsck there....

I have heard all the scare stories myself about things getting stolen out of checked luggage, but I recently flew back from London with eight knives purchased in Theirs, France, and none were stolen. A couple of years ago my son's mother brought me back three Eneps from Bangkok and though they looked at her funny when they inspected her baggage on her return, the knives arrived unscathed. I suspect that though theft happens, it is less common that many suggest. Keep in mind that everything stolen out of luggage is a potential claim against the airlines, which affects their bottom line.
