Can I have some Wilson 3OUR-20 Rockwell Tester help please?

Hi! I purchased a Wilson 3OUR0-20 Rockwell tester yesterday. It came from a knife maker who had gotten out of knife making. When loading the minor load the gauge is very jerky and stiff and the capstan wheel nut does not adjust smoothly at all. It seems like the lift penetrator is maybe a little seized up? It is so jerky that the gauge jumps all over the place. Does anyone have advise on how to make it operate smoothly? Thanks!
 
Be careful when lubricating around the dial gauge, as I don't believe it's recommended that you oil them.

This may not be for your exact tester, but there's some really good info in the couple of manuals available here:

Page 17 of the Rockwell Hardness Tester Models JR & JS Instructions manual talks about what to do if your dial is sticky. The rest of the manual has some really good info about adjustment, maintenance, and operation of some specific models of testers, but a lot of it will also apply to most Wilson testers.

Check your dash pot for adequate oil as well, and make sure you didn't lose any while moving it to your shop.
 
Thank you! So I ended up ripping it apart and every thing looks good except there were some missing two bolts and nuts. We replaced them but it still reads incorrect between known hardness of steels. The main issue that we are dealing with is that it's extremely hard to set the minor load. You need cheater pipes to try to do it under control. We don't know much about the oil damper, it seems to release slow. Maybe too slow but I don't believe it would affect the minor load adjustment. All the internal parts looked fine. If we raise the arm that the weights hang from while apply the minor load then everything operates smoothly. Any ideas? Thanks
 
Update for everyone. I'm happy to report that we figured out the problem. When we were applying the minor load we were actually running it under the major load. After figuring that out it is working perfectly, well within 1-2 points of actual hardness.
After reading your previous post, this was my suspicion. I'm wondering if a new diamond point would get you much closer to your actual hardness.
I've noticed on mine that mine often reads around a point or so heavy, but if I apply the load and retake the reading without changing anything, it gets to within 1/4 to 1/2 point of my calibration block.
