Ive been getting ready to harden my zebrawood scales for my first knife. Ive read that if you want ti stain you need to do it after hardening. This just seems like it wouldnt work very well. I want to use a light brown cherry colored stain. I was thinling that since the hardener is going to penetrate the entire piece of wood, why dont i just add a little stain to the hardener? Has anyone ever attempted this? Will this even work?

Thanks,
Craig

After a little google search it appears that it contains methanol and acetone. Should dissolve the stain just fine. I'd be more worried about whether or not the chemicals in the stain weaken the abilities of the wood hardner to do its job and/or inhibit its ability to penetrate. Wouldn't hurt to try on a scrap though. I kind of think that I want to try myself, might also give a visual as to how deep the hardner penetrates, too.

i know oils inhibit the hardener, so thats why i was concerned about using a mineral oil base stain. I would like to see the depth of penetration as well, i'll set it up on a scrap piece and see what happens

Not sure why you would want to stain Zebrawood in the first place. It's main redeeming feature is the colour scheme (IMHO).
Most DIY hardeners are pretty meh. Penetration can be pretty spotty and you don't want to know what happens if the temperature goes above 40 degrees C (Like if you leave it on the dashboard on a hot sunny day). Get it stabilised professionally.

Thanks for the advice par. I agree the contrast of zebra looks great i just want to darken it slightly. Thatd why i was thinking a diluted light brown cherry color. I will look into having it done professionally. This is my first knife and i would hate to mess it up.
