Can I nuke my sharpmaker?

i know this might sound like a stupid question, but i've gone sharpening happy with my new sharpmaker 204 and have been sharpening some of my older blades. the rods seem to fill with steel pretty quickly, so i rinse them often. i was wondering if i could nuke them in the microwave, so i could get them dry quickly. will this crack the rods; or, can i just use them wet?

Just a guess, but general material mechanics would say DON'T RAPIDLY HEAT WET/DAMP CERAMIC RODS. Just a guess really, but I feel strongly about that opinion. I would really think they would crack.

I have no idea on using it wet. I would say just do a knife or two at a time and you really shouldn't have that problem as long as you don't reprofile them every time you sharpen them and you don't let them get overly dull between sharpenings.

Hi Vesik. I assume that you are cleaning them with scouring powder and a scouring pad for dishes? That will get them the cleanest, the fastest.

I usually dry mine with a towel. In a few seconds they are ready to use.

The microwave shouldn't hurt them. They have been fired at very high temperatures (3000+ degrees F.) for more than 3 days. But I don't see the advantage to the microwave?

thanks for the replies. i thought that maybe the stones were kind of more porous than they actually are. i didn't know if water in those pores would hinder the sharpener's effectiveness. after thinking about it, i figured the stones prolly don't absorb much water at all. anyway, thanks again!

As long as we already have this Sharpmaker topic, I won't start up a new one, but ...

SAL, THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT !!!

My arm is sore from instant repetitive stress syndrome, my knives are DANGEROUSLY sharp, and two fingertips are sporting flesh-colored strips of flexible plastic covering bleeding nicks.

I just got my Sharpmaker and I haven't finished touching up my entire collection yet, but the kitchen blades gleam evilly in the light, and the vegetables are SCARED.

This is one addictive piece of equipment

No kidding. My 2 Sharpmakers (203 and 204) have my Lansky Kit sitting in my "knife-drawer" cowering in fear.

The Sharpmakers are EXCELLENT!.

I love my 203, only I bought it the same week the 204 came out... DOH!

I have tried and tried to get the 1200 grit stones clean! No matter how hard I scrub, they still look dirty. I suppose the surface is clean? Anyone else like to comment?

Thanks

Maybe this is a dopey question ... why bother drying the stones at all? When I'm doing a marathon sharpening session, after I clean the stones, I give 'em a quick wipe with a dry paper towel, then stick them back in the base and keep going.

I would have to reccomend against putting the sharpmaker stones in teh microwave. Once when I was a weee ladd of 8 or 9, I put some damp granite rocks into the microwave...
within 3 seconds they were red hot, and after about 5-10 they "nonviolently" shattered. Im gonna assume that the porous black stones will behave similarly, the white, perhaps not, but if they absorb water then DONT DO IT MAN!!!!! when I find my stones are clogged and nothing will clean them, I soak em in some sorta corrosive acid, I use Mag Wheel cleaner in the spray, usually does the trick.

Dudes -- I'd carry my 203MT wherever I go, not to mention, some scouring pads too!!
