I would like to remove the left side thumb opening stud on my Benchmade Adamas and Cold Steel Voyager. Is this possible? Do I need to heat the blade up? Should I use pliers?

I can't speak to the Voyager, but Benchmade thumb studs (and many others) are two pieces that thread together, so having just one is a no-go. No pliers necessary if you want to remove both though, just a T6 for each side.

The studs screw into each other so if you take one off there is nothing to hold on to for the other side. If you use pliers cover the studs with tape so you wont be marking up the studs. If the studs are screw in then use the correct torx driver. AS far as heat goes soak in hot water , no torch etc.

On the Voyager , two pieces screw together . Removed just leaves a non-threaded hole .

Pic is with studs removed for wav mod :

If you can get it apart, you can replace the male threaded part with a small machine screw of the appropriate size.....

There are a variety of aftermarket single-sided thubstuds that are secured in place with a screw. They are sold by knife parts vendors like usaknifemaker.com, knifekits.com, and no doubt others as well. It's just a matter of finding one you like that will fit your knife.

I replaced the double-sided thumbstud on my Al Mar SERE 2000 with this single-sided one.
