I'll be traveling oversea by plane, so is it OK to store them in check in luggage?
I am assuming that any type of knife is still not allowed on board, anybody have first hand experience?

Thanks

Yes, you can bring them on a trip, just make sure that they conform to the laws of the country that you are visiting. If you are not sure of the laws, a Victornox Swiss Army Knife is usually a safe bet. If you are bringing something more expensive I would suggest that you get to the airport early and have your bags inspected so that you can lock them before checking in.

Yeah. I flew from Washington state to South Carolina a little while ago and brought an Opinel in my checked bag. I also bought a SAK in a Wal-Mart in SC and brought it home (also in checked bag). Like you, I wasn't sure what would happen so I only flew with cheap knives. Now (haveing done it) I might have enough confidence to bring a BenchMade or something more expensive.

As long as they are in checked baggage you can take anything you want, either a SAK or a machete.Nothing sharp in the plane or on you at all.

Yeah in checked bags you can bring any blade you want. I put my Endura in the checked bag. Just don't forget to put it in the checked bag before you put it on the cargo loading belt and walk to the metal detector or you will have to throw it in the garbage. I would be cautious about what I take to another country as Customs could search you and your bags and take it away and or charge you. Just don't take anything you don't want stolen by the luggage theives.(Both airport employee and street level). I may go on a trip soon and want to take my Dave Beck WSK but I might leave it at home or send it VIA UPS first so that the ramp rats don't happen to steal it from my checked bags.

All otherwise legal knives are fine in checked baggage on domestic US flights.

Internationally departing from the US, the US doesn't care what otherwise legal knives are in your checked baggage. But, the country you arrive into may have its own laws, so check on that before you leave.

Returning to the US, just no switchblades including balisongs and watch out for endangered species stuff.

Keep in mind that the airline's liability for loss of or theft from your baggage on international flights is quite low. When British Airways lost one of my bags a few years ago, they just paid me the full limit amount. As I recall, it was about $620.

where are you going to? if we know that, some of us can share particular experience. For eg., I had no problems with knives checked in with my backpack when entering Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia (pre-9/11). I usually carry only an Endura VG10 and an SAK Explorer for travelling - one of the best combo IMO. Not too expensive but very functional.

For future trips, I will switching to a Delica VG10 PE (easier for urban carry with the 3 inch blade) and the Explorer, and hopefully a small 6 inch loaded strop that I hope to fashion from an old belt.
