Can I transform an old planer blade into a kiridashi? challenge accepted

Recently I found an old stanley planer in my basement, and thought "what could I do with that" Since i'm more of a knife guy than a wood guy...I took it apart and salvaged the blade. I plan to get another grind on it and to thread para cord to make a handle.

(side note, this thing is like 15 years old and says made in england...idk much about stanley tools but what kind of steel do they use?)

You can do this, and it will work.
However it is very hard to cut or grind on hardened steel, as you will discover. I'd recommend using an angle grinder with a cutting wheel to get your rough profile. And for all that's good and holy, use a vise and be extremely careful.

You could also buy a piece of 1084 for very little money and make your own kiradashi from scratch. The Stanley blade doesn't buy you much except heat-treat, and that also buys you trouble as I mentioned. 1084 is one of the easiest steels to heat-treat and makes a fantastic blade.

Mosey over to the Shop Talk sub-forum and you'll get a WHOLE LOT MORE feedback than here.

Interested in selling the plane? Or if your set on the project possibly trading for some steel? PM me.

Just FYI, hand planes are pretty useful if you take the time to sharpen the blade. If you make a knife down the road that needs a wooden handle a plane will probably come in handy.

Hold on a second.

If it is a hand plane you might be able to sell it for good money and buy the supplies you need.

You need to read the rules. Blastermaster doesn't have the correct membership to sell on this site. Asking him to do so will only get you in to trouble. We also do not do any business in the discussion forums. All business takes place in the Exchange forum.

Thanks Morrow.

The plane may be worth a fair bit, depending on type and model. The kiridashi will be worth maybe $10-20. Steel to make a kiridashi is only a few bucks. Tearing the plane apart is not a smart decision.

There is a lot of discussion on how people regrind planer blades into knives, but you got lost on the terminology

Hand Plane
These are good useful hand tools and there is a huge collector market for them.
You can turn those into cash and turn cash into real knife steel

Planer
It's an automated machine that uses sharpenable, replaceable planer blades

Planer blades
Once they are sharpened to minimum width, they are tossed - those are the planer blades that people regrind, because they have no useful purpose anymore

Normally D2 steel and good luck making a blade out of hardened D2.
PS: If it gets past Gold/Blue your temper is ruined Spend $10 and buy some decent 1080 or 1095 from Alpha Knife supply

Hankins,
It appears he has a Stanley plane, not D2 planer blades. It is most likely 1095 or W1/W2.
