can i use narrow belts?

thought i'd ask you guys before cutting up a perfectly good belt and trying this...

i'd like to use a sanding belt about 3/8" wide for some profiling work...would a belt that narrow work on a 2x72 or would it slide off? if so, anybody come up with some kind of modification that would make it work?
 
It will work just fine. That's why the sell belt splitters for just that purpose. I put one on my grinder turned inside out for some tasks.
 
I've done it. I had a new belt immediately fray on one edge. I wasn't about to throw it away, so I split it in half. It worked fine. Just make sure your tracking is set pretty tight; it wanted to move around a bit more.
